I've just moved house today. All settled in and realise I haven't switched my home insurance details. Tried to do it online but couldn't. Company don't open till monday what can I do? Can you get temporary cover online at a weekend somewhere. Major panic ruining my new house joy!

If you bought did you my insure at exchange.
If you are in rented start a new policy on line tonight and cancel the old one on Monday.

We are in Scotland. Our solicitor said we needed it for the mortgage funds to be released but we never did it and the funds were released.

We have also apparently just renewed our home insurance to start on the 29th Aug so don't even know if I can cancel that one!!!

God I'm such an idiot. Honestly can't believe I've done this!

Don't panic. Check your current policy wording about cancelling and fees. Many will give a refund. If so how on line take a policy with immediate cover. Even if it doesn't offer a refund how much are you going to lose? If you are paying monthly...
Not much

I now have 2 home insurance policies and at this point don't actually care if they don't let me cancel one of them. Now wondering what the hell else really important stuff will we have forgotten to do!

Don’t panic. If it makes you feel better, it was 2 months after we moved some years ago that I realised we had no home insurance. This was just over 10 years ago, we had a stonking mortgage and riots down the road with a lot of arson. We sorted it v soon after.

id go on compare the market or similar and by a policy right now

(so long as you havent claimed you can normally cancel and cool off within a week or so, so perhaps plan to do that...... might need to pay a small admin fee but worth it to be insured from right now)

Haretest · 25/08/2023 23:52

You can cancel within two weeks of any service bought online.

Thanks everyone. I've done it now. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has done this.
