Tray of chicken breasts from supermarket. Best before 23.8.23.
Found them 7.30 am today and put in freezer.
Can i defrost this afternoon to cook and eat tonight?
Or too risky?

I wouldn't have put them in the freezer - if you were planning to eat them today why bother?
But if they smelled ok I would eat them.

Ragwort · 24/08/2023 08:46

Yes ... just smell them .. do you really need. Mumsnet advice to make a simple decision. The chicken doesn't suddenly go 'off' at the stroke of midnight.

LadyKenya · 24/08/2023 08:47

Why freeze them if you wanted to eat them today, that makes little sense. But yes, as long as they do not smell bad, I would have no issue consuming them.

Goosegoose21 · 24/08/2023 08:47

I'd have not bothered with the freezer wither. Sniff them. You'll know if they're off but yeah they'll be fine.

UnsolicitedOpinions · 24/08/2023 08:51

Just get them out of the freezer now and put them back in the fridge before they’re properly frozen. If they do get fully frozen then you’ll have to defrost them out of the fridge to get them defrosted in time to cook and that’s when there would be more risk of bacteria growing.

I can’t for the life of me understand why you would put them in the freezer this morning if you were going to use them tonight though - you should have just left them in the fridge and eaten them tonight as long as they didn’t smell bad or look bad.

KrisAkabusi · 24/08/2023 08:52

It's best before not use by so they're probably fine. Even if it was use by, with just one day's difference, I'd probably eat them anyway.

Why didn't you put them in the fridge to just cook tonight ? No I wouldn't eat them frozen then defrosted but loads would so its up to you.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 24/08/2023 08:55

I thought meat had a use by date not a best before? But yes I would use it if it smelled ok.

NeedTheSeaside · 24/08/2023 08:58

Are you sure it's best before? I would have thought with chicken it would be use by?

Anyway, that aside, (if I wasn't vegetarian 😂) I'd use them if they looked ok & passed the sniff test.

also wouldn't have put them in the freezer.

butterpuffed · 24/08/2023 08:59

Chicken breasts are Use By not BB . There is always a little leeway and one day after should be fine , but put them back in the fridge .

hylian · 24/08/2023 09:00

Freezing and defrosting them is going to give more opportunity for bacteria to grow.

Leave them in the fridge and eat tonight if they smell OK. Don't eat them later than today.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 24/08/2023 09:02

What was the point in putting them in the freezer?

I would eat them but probably not today now - I'd want them properly frozen for a few days first.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 24/08/2023 09:06

Most chicken is Use By rather than best before dates. As pp have said dont worry about putting in the freezer, but only use it this afternoon if it smells OK.

dottiedodah · 24/08/2023 09:16

A good sniff and you will know! Get them out of freezer ASAP and cook thoroughly .Should be fine I would think
