Other people's food hygiene

AIBU to not want to eat the food we ordered from a takeaway because it smells like someone has been unwell/had a very upset stomach. The entire place smells of it. DH says if we'd had it delivered we wouldn't know any different. AIBU to not trust strangers hand hygiene and not want to risk catching something, I have a big deadline coming up, followed by surgery and emetophobia.

Do you mean it smelled of farts, or vomit??

HTmmm · 23/08/2023 16:04

Diarrhoea, overwhelmingly so.

I'm not sure what you're actually saying here - do you mean that you ordered a takeaway online and then went you went to collect it, the premises you collected it from smelled of shit?

Annaishere · 23/08/2023 16:04

I wouldn’t eat that either

Yes.

Diarrhoea, overwhelmingly so.

OK - yeah, I'd probably give a food outlet a miss if it smelled of diarrhoea tbh.

Taxiii · 23/08/2023 16:05

The restaurant smelled of diarrhoea?

Moveoverdarlin · 23/08/2023 16:06

Are you being unreasonable to not want to eat food from a restaurant that smells of shit? No.

catsnhats11 · 23/08/2023 16:06

I'm very fussy about food that has been prepared by anyone else, and I don't like spending wasting money on takeaways, but for most people it's a non-issue and you'll probably be fine.

Check the food hygiene rating online? I mean a 5 star is no guarantee of course, but if it's 1-3 at least you can justify turning it down.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 23/08/2023 16:09

Was it the restaurant that smelled or the drains outside? Drains can stink overwhelmingly of shit if they're blocked.

Soverymuchfruit · 23/08/2023 16:09

It's most likely another customer who went in just before you and let one rip. But yeah, can see why you're put off, esp with surgery coming up. Your DH can make his own decision.

Paintedtoenail · 23/08/2023 16:11

Check ratings first and foremost. As a fellow emetophobe I am terribly fussy

with this. You have to be.

I would not eat food from any place that smelt of shit. Saying that, maybe a previous or present customer had let one rip and it was a silent but deadly and lingered for ages.

I don’t know but whatever it was, I wouldn’t be tucking into any takeaway that smelt of shit.

PriOn1 · 23/08/2023 16:12

Might it be bad drains?

If I smelt vomit, it would be a definite no. Diarrhoea smell there would be a bit more leeway as there’s less likely to have been aerosolisation. Diarrhoea might have been a child into a nappy or at least contained in some way, though obviously it could also be a staff member.

It would also depend how easy it would be to ditch it and go elsewhere. If I hadn’t paid and could get something else easily, I probably would.

Paintedtoenail · 23/08/2023 16:14

Reading your post again makes me ask whether you are there now as your post reads in present text. If you are there then cancel it and leave. Simples.

tt9 · 23/08/2023 16:18

never worth risking making yourself ill. just chuck it.

tbh I only order from places with hygiene rating of 5 + I check the pics of the restaurant and reviews. don't ever try new places before deadline.

but that's because I'm on drugs that make my stomach stupidly sensitive.

Sparkos · 23/08/2023 16:41

YANBU. I have emetophobia too
