Honestly, for two years I worked a low paid (almost minimum wage) job. My mum hated the fact that I worked there because I’m educated and have multiple degrees but I liked it.
I liked the flexibility, the hours, the fact you could pick and choose which site you worked at, whenever you wanted. Most of my coworkers were the same age with some a bit older than me. I liked the diverse mix of ages of the workplace.
Earlier this year I had my first proper grown up job post degree and initially I liked it. My salary doubled what I was being paid before, my hours are shorter and it’s half day on Friday. It’s a typical middle class job and most of my coworkers are typical middle class people.
I wonder if it’s because I didn’t spend most of my childhood in middle class areas that I’m feeling like this and middle class culture is foreign to me in some ways. Or maybe it’s the fact that most of my coworkers are in their 40s and I’m in my 20s that I’m feeling this way. My coworkers are entirely in a different phase of life to me. I don’t know if it’s the job itself that’s making me feel old, almost like it’s a job for older more life experienced people in a way and it just doesn’t suit me at my current life phase.
I just feel very old ever since starting this job. Can a job make you feel older?
