To wonder why anyone is interested in these shows and people?

I'm talking about the reality type of show that go into celebs' houses and report on the details of their lives. I fail to see who would be interested and why the subjects think THEY are sufficiently interesting to the public. I write this after seeing a trailer for Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez's fly on the wall show. This is the latest in a line of them. Katie and Peter years ago. those Mummy Diaries things with people from TOWIE and the Real Housewives thingies.

I get that it is cheap tele, but I don't understand how they are of any interest to anyone. The subjects aren't very interesting or special in any way. Do you like watching these shows and if so do you think I'm a killjoy?

Don’t watch them then, I’m sure there are things you watch that other people would find boring.

WaltzingWaters · 18/08/2023 12:51

Yeah I can’t understand it myself. A friend made me watch an episode of TOWIE once saying I’d love it. It was awful. Absolutely awful. Completely don’t understand the appeal. But of course the world would be boring if we all liked the same things - so each to their own!

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 18/08/2023 12:51

Because humans are inherently nosey and interested in how other people live and these shows offer an opportunity to empathise, normalise and ridicule in equal measures.

Also, we’ve also had ‘idols’ since the dawn of time - people who are found to be charismatic and to whom others are drawn. These shows are no different and we all have different idols.

Don't watch, won't watch. That doesn't mean I can't have a discussion about it.

It’s just a modern day freak show really isn’t it? Gawping at peoples lives that are very different to your own.

I’m sure there’s a very scholarly sociological reason for it all but I’d guess that humans are just naturally nosey and like to flex their self awareness muscles and judge others.

Inmybirthdaysuit · 18/08/2023 12:56

I'm watching the one on Netflix with Tyson Fury and his family at the minute. It's interesting to see how people very different to you/with very different lives to you live. People can be fascinating.

Flufferblub · 18/08/2023 12:59

I'm actually looking forward to watching the Tyson Fury one at some point. Hoping it will be funny

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 18/08/2023 13:01

They’re quite good when you have a hangover. Mindless, harmless, a bit of drama to distract you from beer fear 😂

DeedlessIndeed · 18/08/2023 13:04

I'm not a fan, but would say there is an element of escapism to it. Watching very different lives can temporarily take you away from your own.

ManateeFair · 18/08/2023 13:08

Different people have different interests. Reality shows about celebrities aren't my thing, but I don't find it weird that other people like them - basically it's just people taking an interest in other people's lives, isn't it?

The fact that it's a celebrity is just the hook, really. And it also adds an element of escapism for a lot of viewers, because they enjoy a glimpse at the life of someone who is more wealthy than them and has a more elevated lifestyle. People read 'At home' features in OK and Hello for the same reason.

Floogal · 18/08/2023 13:28

Then iTVbe would cease to exist. I agree though absolute yawn fest

Floogal · 18/08/2023 13:31

That said I liked the Osbournes and at home with the Eubanks. The Hulk Hogan one was wired. Did want to see the Ice loves Coco, but wasn't available in the UK

TheAverageJoanne · 22/08/2023 07:14

Gemma Atkinson seems to be all over the papers - online version at least - these days. I didn't realise she was so famous. I've only ever seen her in Strictly.

crumpet · 22/08/2023 07:19

It’s been a thing for decades - Through the Keyhole was on in the 80s

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 22/08/2023 07:26

The ones I object to are the ones that involve celebrity children who through no choice of their own have every minutiae of their daily lives made public and who are judged and ridiculed just because of their parents poor judgement and need for money and desire for fame and celebrity status. I think children should be protected from this and that they have as much right to privacy as anyone else.

MidFourtiesAlready · 22/08/2023 07:30

They r not my thing. Haven't watched the majority of those kind of shows. However, i did have a secret thing for watching the Peter Andre and Katie price show!

Different strokes for different folks! We all.like different things on TV. That's ok!

Sigmama · 22/08/2023 07:33

Everyone has different tastes, I'm sure you watch stuff others find interminably boring. I would rather stick pins in my eyes than watch sport on tv

But I suppose the difference is that audiences, or some of them, find these people aspirational models of wealth and fame, despite (because of?) their total banality? It’s hardly pointing and laughing at the Bearded Lady or the Elephant Man…

MiddleAgedAndExhausted · 22/08/2023 07:52

Lots of people enjoy Hello and OK type magazines which are similar. Also you are correct - they are cheap. They require fewer staff to make them.

Simonjt · 22/08/2023 07:58

I used to watch the series about the Osbournes, it’s now pretty handy to think back at Kelly’s behaviour when I think our two are being pains in the arse. I watched Hogans knows best for maybe 2-3 episodes, what an awful awful man.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/08/2023 08:00

Each to their own isn't it? I'd rather scoop my own eyes out than watch an episode of Game of Thrones, but I've been known to enjoy a couple of episodes of the Kardashians on a rainy afternoon. As long as I'm not forcing you to watch it, what's the problem?

LakeTiticaca · 22/08/2023 08:24

I suppose its a kind of updated version of Through the Keyhole which used to be quite interesting, all though back then there were fewer channels and better quality programming.
I remember back when satellite TV was coming on the scene and we were told there would be 100s of channels to choose from. The detractors declared that the quality of the programmes would decline and they weren't wrong.
Itw hard to find anything decent to watch nowadays
