What on google play apps costs 44.99?

rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:28

There is a charge on my partners account for £44.99 for google play apps. Its on the statement as GOOGLE GOOGLE PLAY APP and it says underneath debit card purchase - continuous.

I have looked at google play apps and can see none that are this much money. But after a quick google i've seen subscriptions for dating sites that are this amount. Would a subscription to a dating site show as this if it was done through a google app does anyone know? Or is that literally the cost of an app?

The thing that stands out is that he has an iphone, for personal use, so would use the app store surely for anything on his personal phone. But he has an android for work so I'm thinking it must of been done on the work phone? But debited from his personal account.

I can't say I saw the charge, but we've been having a few issues, nothing that would warrent dating someone else though! (or so I think), but just general run of mill life is a bit challenging right now stuff.

He usually mentions stuff he buys, in fact usually he asks me to get it or sort it, but this wasn't mentioned and its a pretty big sum.

I don't want to jump to conclusions (although I know this sounds like I have), but anyone any idea if apps actually cost this on google play. I had a look and couldn't find any at that price.

Or does anyone subscribe to a dating app through google play and it shows as that on the statement?

My Disney+ subscription reads as "google payment" on my credit card.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 16/08/2023 15:01

Could be anything. Could be in-app purchase on a game, could be money he’s paid into a gambling app, could be a paid app, could be an annual subscription fee to an app or service (eg: Spotify, headspace, apple TV) could be additional cloud storage, There are lots of things that cost this much, definitely not just dating sites, but obviously no one but your husband can clarify what it was spent on.

ChrisPPancake · 16/08/2023 15:03

On Google Play, click "payments and subscriptions". This brings up another list. Subscriptions tells you active subscriptions and their costs. "Budget and History" shows recent spending, in-app as well as app purchases.

I don't use Apple but I understood that they have their own app store so wouldn't use Google play?

Spangers · 16/08/2023 15:03

I have an iPhone but have a Google Play charge as a subscription for cloud storage on Google Drive.

Ifeelsuchflutterings · 16/08/2023 15:04

If he has a gambling habit, and there are unexplained payments my brain would leap to online gambling not a dating site

Giantwindows · 16/08/2023 15:05

This is already exhausting. Just ask him. No one here knows what it’s for.

brokenlore · 16/08/2023 15:05

Hi OP,
I don't know if this helps by I have a subscription for using Microsoft word, it's a similar price to your DH fee, I pay it once a year. I'd much rather have purchased the packet for a one off fee, but it all seems to be subscription services. Like you Dh I have iPhone/ iPad for home use and android / Microsoft for work.
I think all you can do is ask him.

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:06

Yes I know, I did think that, but its such a specific amount 44.99. When he has done stuff on his gambling app its always solid amounts £10, £20 etc. And I do actually have access to his gambling app, which he is in agreement with, because of him losing over a grand a few yaers ago. So it has restrictions etc. There are no other apps on his phone or ipad for gambling.
So I think because of the amount listed it looks like a subscription or a one off payment (although underneath it says continuous, so would that suggest a subscription?)

check his download history

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:10

I don't want to ask him because he'll know I looked at his bank.
I suppose I was hoping someone has the same thing on their statement and its for something really mundane. Or someone has that on their statement and can say, yep thats it says on mine for this dating app.
Not sure how else I can bring it up. I suppose I could say a friend uses android and I know he has one for work, and shes confused about the app store, is it easy to use or something.
I'm way overthinking I know. I just have this gut feeling that it stands out as being very odd thing to be on his statement, considering he has an iphone and is basically technically useless with anything to do with purchasing online or anything online really. Have no idea he'd even know how to buy something on google play. Whenever he wants something on app store, which is very rare, he asks me to help him as he has no idea what hes doing. Apparantly.

OP you're going to drive yourself batshit with this. You don't trust him, you're playing detective to try and catch him out doing something. Your marriage is over anyway, just ask him.

If you're at the point of snooping, it's over man. Why torment yourself this much?

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:16

we're not married. And I do trust him, but with the gambling thing a while ago and we've been arguing a bit lately. I wasn't looking for this, I just wanted to confirm the transaction from his friend was before he went off to this other thing.

With the gambling history I don't care that i'm snooping. I'm not being left in the dark about that if it rears its ugly head. He knows this and its the price he is paying for being a massive twat and losing a shit load of money. But this just stood out and I just sort of thought, why has be bought something from google play store and wow thats really expensive, its not just a 99p little app.

Maybe it is gambling. In which case I'd like to find that out anyway. But the amount does not indicate gambling.

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:17

So actually yes, I don't 100% trust him. you are right. But thats because he has done things which dented that. But I also want to beleive he is no longer a massive twat.

Do you have access to his bank account or did you see the charge on a paper statement?

I access my partner's account and if there are any strange charges I ask him about them to check they aren't fraud. He is very happy for me to do this as he can't be bothered doing it himself. I was just wondering if you could innocently ask him about the charge just saying that you wanted to check that his card hadn't been compromised.

InSpainTheRain · 16/08/2023 15:18

To me the strange thing is he has a google app store charge, but uses an iphone and ipad. Does he have a separate phone? I don't believe you can pay for a subscription from the google app store without having something other than an iphone. However, I wouldn't completely totally jump to that conclusion - I have had incorrect charges from Google twice now (they were both refunded).

SallyWD · 16/08/2023 15:20

Have you asked him what it is?

WedRine · 16/08/2023 15:23

I have subscribed to a dating app before and it had the name of the app on the statement. But this is just 1 app and doesn't rule it out. But 44.99 seems fairly cheap so I'm dubious it's that.

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:24

Yes thats exactly it. Thats why its strange. Anything personal he'd get via app store. unless it was to go on a phone I don't see on a daily basis. Thast where my mind has jumped to.
As far as I am aware he does not even have a gmail account, let alone a google play account.

According to Google the statement item "GOOGLE *Google Play" refers ro Google Play Movies and TV.

As it's marked "Continuous" it looks like a subscription.

He may be watching something on his work phone. If so, the big question is what.

You said he asks you for help with the app store, but then he could ask someone at work for help too, couldn't he?

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:30

he asked me to check something on his work phone about 3 months ago when we were in the car. Just to find a number to call back. And the access code was the same as I'd set up for him on it a few years before.
So I guess I can see if its the same. but to be honest if the access code to that phone has been changed its going to make me very suspicious. As he couldn't set it up in the first place so changing it would of been a total task for him and not something he'd of just done on a whim. And after the best part of 3 years.
If I can't find anything though I can always tell him the mortgage people will need newer bank statements and see if he hands them over. I can mention it then.
I'm hoping its just something he needed for work and forgot to expense it (very unlike him to forget that though), or something totally innocent and my gut is just having a joke with me.

I accidentally paid for an annual headspace sub, despite not using it, and that was that price

Was coming on here to say that. My husband said he was trying it but would cancel before he got charged. But a charge of £49.99 appeared bec husband had the date wrong by one day. I was stunned that an app would cost that much.

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:35

yes I did see this: GOOGLE *Google Play

But his says GOOGLE GOOGLE in capitals which says its youtube, but then theres the PLAY APP in capitals afterwards. So i'm thinking its something through an app, not he actual app purchase. As further investigation states the app name would also be there afterwards (when its in lower case).
Its a bit confusing.
And I'm probably over thinking, its been a long week and we're only half way through.
I also looked at the moves, channels bit and there is nothing there for 44.99 anyway.
He could have asked for help at work, but the date showing on his statement, he was working from home so no one to ask.

I definitely need to know what it is though, as he just never buys stuff from apps. And never from google play. If it has a cost involved in the app store he grumps off hes not paying it. So this amount must of been really worth it for him.

I looked at his account online, so not a paper statement. So not something I could have accidentally come across.
