How much hair do you lose when you wash it?

I'm early 30s, and feel like the amount I lose has increased lately. I've got a short bob, and wash it most days. I lose about 7 to 9 hairs when I run it through my hands, not sure if this is a lot? I just feel like it's increased over the last few weeks, as I've been very stressed. I take vitamins but my diet could improve.
I know we lose around 100 a day so maybe I'm overreacting. I haven't noticed a difference in the thickness of my hair yet though.

I'd think about not washing your wash so much.

7-9 hairs a time? I lose way more than that. I really wouldn't worry unless your hair is very thin already?

Baconsandwich33 · 12/08/2023 17:13

Unfortunately it's very fine so gets greasy within a day. Also, because it's so short I can't just scrape it back.

I have never really asked the question before so just curious, my hair is quite thick luckily.

I think it depends how often you brush or comb you hair. When my hair is straight and I brush it regularly, I lose far less than when I’ve left it curly and not brushed.

Baconsandwich33 · 12/08/2023 17:15

I brush it a few times a day but try not to that much. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing.

i lose loads more, never counted. Have thick hair & haven't noticed it's any thinner.

nancy75 · 12/08/2023 17:16

I think I lose about 5-7 hairs a minute!!
very curly hair so never brushed but when it’s washed the amount that falls out could easily be mistaken for a small rodent

Baconsandwich33 · 12/08/2023 17:16

Yeah, it sounds like it's normal. I should stop worrying.

Ha @nancy75 I think you're me 😁

AffIt · 12/08/2023 17:17

Depends - I have very thick curly hair that I never brush or comb unless it's wet and heavily conditioned, so I expect to have a good handful once I've combed it through carefully with my fingers in the shower. I only do that once or twice a week.

I'd be more concerned if I had straight hair and that was happening daily.

I lose more hair in the summer. I read somewhere that humans do moult slightly in hot weather. I live in a country that is hot in the summer and I’ve noticed there are more hairs in the drain at this time of year.

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/08/2023 17:19

My hair is fine and needs washing every day, like yours OP.

Loads, regularly clearing the plug hole! Have mid length straight fine hair.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 12/08/2023 17:19

Hundreds! I have a lot of hair. It’s wavy and I lose less if I wear it straight as I comb each section to straighten it. I’ve just come back from holiday and have worn it curly for two weeks and I’m losing a handful at each wash as it hasn’t been brushed so much.

Ha @nancy75 I think you're me 😁

Poor you, does your hair make you look like Hagrid in the morning too? 😂

LauderSyme · 12/08/2023 17:22

I don't think you are losing a lot of hair, no. I really wouldn't worry if I were you. I lose a lot more than that.

I've noticed that hormonal changes have a huge effect on how much hair I lose. The two times in my life when my hair got noticeably thinner were after giving birth and going into early menopause.

I'm 46 and lose loads of hair every time I wash. It made me cry at one point.

I have recently lost a lot of weight and was told that this could be the reason. Also peri.

But I got my hair cut a bit shorter and it seems to have subsided a bit now.

oh yes, I also lost a lot of hair when I lost weight. It went very brittle and I had to cut it very short to get to the good stuff. It's come back since though (thankfully the weight hasn't).
