To report my arsehole neighbour with a modified exhaust

So sick of it, 5-6 times a day he's driving this thing through a quiet street where kids play/elderly crossing, revving it and idling it and then constant booms when he sets off, sounds like he's taken the filter off; though that was illegal? My DH is ill with cancer and I've had enough of him being woken up at 11pm, 3am etc.

Anyone lived on a street with this, aside from moving what can i even do? :(

You probably cant do anything. It passed an MOT, so its road legal.

GasPanic · 11/08/2023 16:57

Sometimes they put stuff on for the MOTs and then take them off again afterwards.

I would report a vehicle nuisance.

GreggingIt · 11/08/2023 16:59

Can’t stand these things and they should be illegal if not already. Report if you think it’ll go anywhere, why are they out and about at all hours would be my next question.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 11/08/2023 17:01

I hate these - just another example of everything turning to shit that so many of them are around and able to do as they like.

LlynTegid · 11/08/2023 17:02

Is the person in employment? If you don't think he officially is, how do you think he has the money. Allege benefit fraud which you can report anonymously.

Alongside council noise nuisance, which you will need to have dates and times for.

ArtVandalay · 11/08/2023 17:03

What can you do? I don’t think you can report it.

I sympathise as our twat of a neighbour has a Maserati. It’s not his main car, he has about 3 others. But he likes to drive it at 7am daily. For some reason he has to start it in advance of actually driving anywhere and it’s SO fucking loud, it wakes the entire house (and all our disgruntled neighbours). He does the same joyride every evening and has a lovely speeding trip through our 30mph village.

Motomum23 · 11/08/2023 17:06

Oh I feel for you. My neighbours son took the baffle out of his motorcycle exhaust to make it obnoxiously loud. We live on a main road with constant traffic but you could tell this one bike coming a mile off, and it regularly woke me up. I presume a different neighbour complained or he crashed it because it randomly stopped making that noise.
I would contact the council as a noise complaint as its not legal to have an exhaust that loud.

MonumentalLentil · 11/08/2023 17:14

It's illegal to modify the exhaust system to make a vehicle noisier after it has been 'type approved' (checked it meets environmental and safety standards). The police can also take action if your vehicle's silencer doesn't work in the way it was designed or if you're driving in a way that creates too much noise.

Look I won't report him. It's just so bloody noisy and claustrophobic. Thanks for letting me vent!!

OP posts:
Ralye · 11/08/2023 17:16

Thanks for the legal info.

What happens if someone shoves bananas up the exhaust, ‘hypothetically’ asking of course 🙂

Ralye · 11/08/2023 17:17

I don't know what I meant when I said take filter off, it's like he's modified it and it growls non stop etc. Sorry not very good at describing!!

Ralye · 11/08/2023 17:17

@GreggingIt Haha

Definitely report him. I’m also sick of those ridiculously loud motorbikes, twats.

Ralye · 11/08/2023 17:18

This guy must be about 50 too and he has his Jay z on etc 👸

Oh yeah there's a few of them too, it's like fast and furious round here. I think we need to move!

We have something called Operation Crackdown in Sussex especially for this kind of thing. Might be worth having a look to see if you have a similar way of reporting antisocial driving in your area.
These people actually believe people stare at them because they look cool.....

pictoosh · 11/08/2023 17:36

What do they get out of it? What do they think is happening? Do they imagine people are impressed? Do they find other people's exhausts impressive?

pictoosh · 11/08/2023 17:37

It's one of those things where I just don't understand WHY.

Guess he thinks it's impressive?

Thanks @Lakeyloo something to consider.

Should this not be not illegal because it’s noise pollution?

A whisper is about 30 dB, normal conversation is about 60 dB, and a motorcycle engine running is about 95 dB. Noise above 70 dB over a prolonged period of time may start to damage your hearing.

Not saying it will damage your ears but clearly that is bad for human health, stress levels and disturbed sleep etc.

You’re gonna have to do it… 🍌 😂

hattie43 · 11/08/2023 19:24

These are a nuisance on my road aswell . Tbh I'd destroy the car if it was an immediate neighbour . It's the most selfish thing to be woken up through the night . Noise increasing modifications should be banned .

There was a tv documentary on c4 recently on this - one of the cunts revved up his stupid cockmobile and it did a massive backfire “ha ha look that woman dropped her phone” he said. They do it deliberately to frighten and intimidate. Cunts.
