Found this in the trough filled with compost left over after pulling giant garlic bulbs from it.
Can anyone identify it for me?

You're so lucky, OP! Elephant hawkmoths are beautiful!

I think that’s the cutest caterpillar I’ve ever seen! I’ve never seen one of those moths either. They’re gorgeous. Are they only found in certain parts of the UK?

I think all over UK. There are different types of Hawk moth....all stunning. Favourite grub is willow herb. Were had one self seeded plant outside our front door and one day I found 2 of those caterpillars. I did some research and we then kept them, fed them and they buried themselves in the earth I provided and then eventually hatched.

Nope. Absolutely not! Kill it with fire

Revolting and ignorant comment

They do make the most gorgeous moths.

I feel jealous that I’ve never seen one! I’ll have to keep my eye out for them, they’re seriously cute. Unfortunately I live in a flat and don’t have a garden so can’t grow anything to tempt them.

I stroked the one in my garden and it was all velvety and lovely. Have looked for another one since and sadly never seen one again.

Don't you wish sometimes that adults would grow the fuck up.

There is a profile on twitter called shit lawns. The pics explain a lot of attitude to wildlife...
Unless this was a joke popular online in which case, it missed "Haaans, get the flamethrower" part
