To think The Rubberbandits 'Spoiling Ivan' is seriously sinister? (TW/CA)

Settle this for me.

I think Spoiling Ivan is sinister and DH thinks it's just a nice funny song.

Considering the sort of songs the RBs do I don't think they'd just make a nice song.

The guy takes a kid from a park. Says he wants to get him drunk. The kid is obviously vulnerable, out in his own at 6. Parents are heroine addicts.

He says " hes good at darts and hugging and doing what he's told"

He shows him his muscles.

And the biggest example to me is he says 'promise we'll be friends until HIS dying day"

Friends until the kid dies, not the adult who you would assume would naturally die first. Seriously threatening undertones.

DH argues that they're just friends because he brings his own kid to meet him, but generational abuse is definitely a thing.

I know it's a bit heavy but

YANBU- The guy is a predator
YABU - Its just a sweet song about a grown man and a kid (🤔😂)

I love the song BTW and I love TRB.

I just think it's a dark song with a happy beat. Whereas DH thinks it's innocent.

The upbeat music and dark lyric reminds me of Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People.

Yeah it's definitely a dark song about a vulnerable kid with addict parents. See DH says he's trying to heko him by getting rid of his parents drugs. But I feel like he was grooming him.

I don't know. Obv it's the RB, so it's doing to be dark, but I think the "dark" here is just the dangerously neglected little boy whose parents are junkies. The undertone is how horribly easy it would be TO groom him.

They said on Twitter that they were making up ridiculous band names, and Spoiling Ivan was one of their ideas and they thought it was hilarious so they worked backwards to make a song out of it.
