I didn't tell neighbour of drilling at 11am

I never know what to do about telling neighbours my diy plans.

I needed some concrete bashed up and got a man with a drill around this morning at 10.50am he started drilling,

Neighbour came over and said "my picture frame if of the wall, you aren't drilling on my side are you". I know her picture frame didn't fall of the wall because I have numerous ones on the wall he was drilling next to and they are all fine. Clearly concerned.

Am I supposed to tell neighbours what I'm doing when it doesn't affect their property etc?

For content he was there 20 mins and finished.

Shes a nosy neighbour at the best of times and probably hates me as I have a mixed race girl living with me. Same neighbour had a jubilee party until 10pm with loud music and a bouncy castle blocking of one side of the road..... didn't invite or tell anyone lol

I used to give my previous neighbour the heads up if I was going to be making any DIY noise and vice versa.....everybody happy. Not so much with the current neighbour though who can be very inconsiderate about the times he chooses to hammer, drill or sand (seems to go on for hours too 😩).That said, I don't think your situation was in any way unreasonable. Your neighbour sounds like a pain.

She's nosy and annoying.... I avoid.

What has your lodger’s race got to do with it?

Gnomegnomegnome · 05/08/2023 22:20

How do you know that she ‘probably’ hates you for this?

Why does she hate you for having a mixed race child? How do you know this - has she said something

megansmarkle · 05/08/2023 22:27

Lodger*. Apologies I should have called her woman.

When I moved in four years ago she commented that she was happy I was white as too much Asians etc.

When a house sold down the road to a European family she made a comment about their race and not being (white) English.

When another Muslim scarf wearing neighbour moved in - she said "you are joking". Disgusted.

So I think having a mixed race lodger won't be to her liking.....

Jokes on her as my parents weren't born in the uk lol

YABU for worrying about offending Mrs Goebbels.

TenderChicken · 05/08/2023 22:38

I live in a terrace and my neighbours and I don't tell each other about our DIY.

Gnomegnomegnome · 05/08/2023 22:46

In that case I wouldn’t worry.

purplecorkheart · 05/08/2023 22:47

In my last house I did telly my neighbour if we were drilling etc. Equally he did the same to us and in fairness to him he would offer to do the drilling for us.

Just because your pictures did not fall it does not mean your neighbour's didn't. There are many different ways of hanging pictures and painting and some are less secure and others.

Admittedly your neighbour sounds like an horrible person but I probably would have have given her the heads up as I would appreciate her to do the same.

drpet49 · 05/08/2023 22:48

I wouldn’t have told the racist neighbour either OP. She sounds absolutely horrible.

StillPerplexed · 05/08/2023 22:49

Probably the ideal time for a short bit of drilling. Everyone is awake by that time and many will be out.

matchamate · 05/08/2023 22:49

I mean if she's that nasty then drill away at 2 am for all I care!

I read that too fast and thought you meant now was!

Considering it was my wall being drilled and we have detached houses.... she's lying.

I'm sorry...you have detached houses?! Drill away!!!!

Ahaha, 10.50pm, time to put up some shelves on the dividing wall!

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 05/08/2023 23:10

I’ve never told my neighbours when I’m drilling and they’d never tell me either.

As long as it’s not in unsocial hours like early morning or evening.

Positive41 · 05/08/2023 23:10

Its ok timewise and on a Saturday. No warning needed.

Give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

Carry on as you are.

purplecorkheart · 05/08/2023 23:22

Ok missed the detached part. Then no unless it was going to go on for days.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 05/08/2023 23:25

I also assumed you must share a wall! Doubt you caused enough vibration for things to fall off her wall in detached houses but I wish you had

ShirleyV · 06/08/2023 07:24

"Considering it was my wall being drilled and we have detached houses.... she's lying."

Oh that changes things! I certainly wouldn't have told her. The time you were drilling was perfectly reasonable. You are right to avoid her. She sounds really awful.
