To think psychotherapist is wrong to suggest this?

Been seeing a psychotherapist for a little while and has suggested I go off sick from work for a significant amount of time.

But the way it came across was like I should take advantage of paid time off. Not like time off to work on myself. It just doesn't sit right with me somehow. Id feel incredibly guilty and would cause more anxiety for me.

AIBU to not want to take their advice?

Well maybe they thought it could help your condition?

If you don’t want to go off sick then don’t. Simple!

Do you have a physical health condition? What is a "significant amount" of time and why do they think you're not fit to work?

Why are you seeing her?

If work related stress is making you I'll that's what sick leave is for!

Do they think you are on the road to burn out?

You don't have to take their advice at all.

Do you feel able to tell them that you don't appreciate their advice? It would be good if you could voice your concerns to them. If they are anything other than receptive to you then find a different one.

Depends on your circumstances and his reasons

If you are not well and are depressed or suffer from severe anxiety of course you can and probably should take sick leave (more so if this is work related), being unwell is not only physical, mental health is very important too

XenoBitch · 04/08/2023 21:52

Your therapist is suggesting it because they think it will help you, and is the best course of action to take to help your mental health.
If your GP said you should have time off for a physical injury, would you listen?
Mental health is no different.

Does your psychotherapist have the authority to write prescriptions or write you a sick note? Could you survive on sick pay? Your mental health is just as, or sometimes more important than physical health.
