To think this is unacceptable and a health hazard?

Hi, I'm currently on vacation and a little worried over the hot tub. The lid is really worn with gaps in. Is this safe to use? They do maintain it well and add chemicals every day. Would I be putting my family at risk letting them use this? AIBU to be mad with the holiday company about this?

I agree it looks tatty but, unless I'm missing something, I'm failing to see the safety risk. The lid won't be on it when you're using it.

GalileoHumpkins · 01/08/2023 17:56

Putting them at risk of what?

Ohdearthisyear · 01/08/2023 17:59

I was concerned of dust/debris/bacteria getting in stagnant water. I had read online of Chemicals evaporating? I don't own a hot tub, so it is all new to me. It isn't maintaining temperature due to it aswell.

What sort of health hazard do you think it is? The cover is there to keep the heat in (and electricity bills down) and to keep debris out of the tub - which would get in anyway if the cover was taken off so you could use it.

Hoppinggreen · 01/08/2023 18:00

Don’t see a problem with that

ManateeFair · 01/08/2023 18:01

If they're treating it with the correct chemicals and keeping it clean, then the lid has nothing to do with safety. The lid is purely there to stop debris getting into it like leaves, bird shit, drowning rats etc. The fact that it's a bit tatty doesn't have any bearing on safety or water quality.

If you mean 'Could a mouse or a slug or something get in through the gap?' then yeah, it's vaguely possible, but that won't pose any danger to you because you'll see the thing floating in the water when you take the lid off and presumably won't get into it.

LBOCS2 · 01/08/2023 18:02

Honestly, the biggest risk with a hot tub is the fact that the water is kept at that temperature long-term and it is a prime breeding environment for water borne bacteria, which is why they're also full of chemicals. If you're ok with that, then I wouldn't worry about a slightly old looking cover.

Chemicals are not going to evaporate through those gaps. There's no increased risk of bacteria. Any dust and debris are harmless.

Ohdearthisyear · 01/08/2023 18:04

Ah, that's great. Thank you all, good to know. Looks like my biggest worry is just it maintaining temperature than. Thank you all, always can turn to Mumsnet.

It’s tatty.#Compoculture?

FOJN · 01/08/2023 18:05

If you're concerned you could take he lid off and run the filter for a couple of hours before use but if they are testing and adjusting he chemicals everyday then it should be fine.

Why would you be mad with the holiday company? Are you hoping to negotiate a partial refund? Just report the problem to be helpful rather than cause drama.

Lamelie · 01/08/2023 18:05

Cross posted, I feel snippy now

Ohdearthisyear · 01/08/2023 18:11

@FOJN it is just because the cover is very old and worn. I know hot tubs can last up to 20 years, but I think I read somewhere covers are 5-7 years, this is I suspect almost triple that time. We have paid a lot of money and it didn't seem great, and losing heat. I was more worried on the other elements though. I'll mention the more minor issues to reception.

OP posts:
Ohdearthisyear · 01/08/2023 18:14

@FOJN it is cold and losing heat, we aren't here long, so maybe a partial refund would be appropriate. We have had some other problems too with other fixtures/fittings falling to bits. Nevermind, really pleased for the change of scenery, and fortunate to be away, first break away in years.

OP posts:
Ohdearthisyear · 01/08/2023 18:17

@Lamelie not at all, I can see why you would think this. I guess when you see pictures of places and save for a long time, it is disappointing when it turns out to not be so great. I think we have the oldest on the site, lots of fixtures dropping to pieces. We did pay alot and came here afew years back, it has changed.

Just complain to management if you feel it's a problem, lucky you get to go on holiday, don't get let this spoil your holiday

Ohdearthisyear · 01/08/2023 18:23

@Usernameunknownfornow exactly, I am so grateful for a change of scenery as it has been years. Thank you, glass half full always the way to go. I was concerned of the safety element but as others have mentioned it is fine, I'm overthinking, it is well maintained.

Zebedee55 · 01/08/2023 18:26

They usually check these hot tubs. It wouldn't worry me.

EnthENd · 01/08/2023 18:28

The lid was never airtight anyway.

I mean, hot tubs are gross sex ponds anyway, but it'd still be a gross sex pond if the lid was brand new.

bladebladebla1 · 01/08/2023 18:52

The drama

Ohdearthisyear · 01/08/2023 22:35

@EnthENd 🤣

Queenfreak · 01/08/2023 22:39

If this is somewhere like parkdean, then they empty, clean and refill with each new check in.
So.... don't have sex in it, and you should be fine 😂

Ohdearthisyear · 03/08/2023 13:17

😂😂 no chance of sex in a hot tub with young children running about. Who on earth has sex in them?? I'm yet to hear this.
