To be excited about my son's ADHD consultant appointment today

Just that really, I'm excited to find out if he has ADHD or not.
It's been a looong wait and his last consultant appointment was cancelled last minute due to illness. He is autistic so this wait for a new appt has been really difficult for him. We need this as a tick box so we can get out of limbo.

Good luck - are you prepared for the fact that he might not have ADHD?

tulipsunday · 31/07/2023 08:23

Hope the appointment goes well and that you get some answers x

Please don’t expect to come out with a solution. It’ll be yes he has adhd now off you go. Support is virtually non existent

Lindy2 · 31/07/2023 08:26

I hope the appointment goes well.

What are you hoping to get from it?

  • confirmation of a suspected diagnosis?
  • medication?
  • support?

It's worth having an idea in your head as to what you want from it.

Unfortunately, there really isn't very much support. You may well be offered medication. Medication works a bit for DD but hasn't been a life changer unfortunately.

Good luck, we're on the assessment pathway and I feel I'll be excited when it comes down to it too!

ZenNudist · 31/07/2023 08:34

Hello what have you said to get to this stage? What's his symptoms and what are you hoping for as treatment?

I'm avoiding going to the doctors about ds2 because as pp says support is non-existent. His sleep is awful so I'd like to start melatonin. I have an unofficial diagnosis of hyperactive ADHD from my sister a CAHMS consultant.

Absolutely, I'll be surprised, but prepared for both outcomes!

I have ADHD, as does my daughter, and am
Autistic. I'm well aware, we just need to tick or cross this box and move on...

That's a shame for your DD - meds have been life changing for me and my daughter. Have you explored non-stimulant meds or Lions Mane?

He's insanely forgetful, can't keep still, hyper or non focussed, sleeps poorly, can't switch his brain off etc

I totally get it. I hope the appointment goes well.

@AuDHD4Me would you mind if I asked more about the meds you're on? My adult daughter is ready struggling with hers. The stimulant one was too much for her.. this current one has turned her into a zombie. We were both so hopeful that the meds would help her as they have so many others. But she is really not doing well. I'm not sure of the names of the meds.
So sorry to derail but I'm at my wits end and don't know where to go from here or how to help her
I hope all goes well for your son and his appointment!

I'm on Equsym XL (slow release methylphenidate) and so is my daughter. It took a while to get the dosage right and my daughter takes a top up in the afternoon.
As an alternative, you might look at Lion's mane as I've heard good things for those who meds didn't work for.

Hugel disappointment (again) apparently there is a discrepancy between school's evidence and the assessment. So he has to be seen in person again. No timescale. Highly frustrating.
Precisely the same as the autism process, school don't see an issue because he's an expert masker and highly intelligent.
