Came away for a few days with DH and Dc. Chain 4*hotel, not that that should matter. Ordered food in the restaurant and sat down to enjoy our meal. DC had hotdogs off the kids menu so they got put straight in front of them. DH ordered a chicken salad, I ordered chicken with potatoes and veg. Ours come out and the waiter automatically puts the salad in front of me without asking. DH points out that is his meal and waiters response is "oh sorry I just presumed". I'm an average size, size 12, again not that it matters. Part of me feels a bit upset that he assumed I should be eating a salad. The other part of me thinks it's laughable that we're still in an era when women should be assumed to be eating salad whilst the men folk eat what they want. I'm a glass of wine down so probably being ridiculous but wanted to get opinions!

It's not because you 'should' have a salad. I imagine the last 30 times the server has had a salad and another dish, it's been the woman who's ordered the salad. Yes it was presumptive, hopefully next time they'll ask.

It's just some blokes narrow view of the world I guess, but I'd be a bit pissed off. These kind of things use to happen constantly (plonk the beer in front of the menfolk and the wine to the ladies) but still that mindset is out there.
On a lighter note maybe he thought your husband looked too fat to be living off salads?

lovemeaminibreak · 30/07/2023 19:47

@IseeNarcPeople haha yes I suppose I could look at it that way. My DM is still of the mindset about beers, she gets so uncomfortable if we go out and I order a pint, I do it now just to annoy her Grin

I would say more of an assumption that your husband wouldn’t want a salad than that you would.

GrumpyPanda · 30/07/2023 19:58

It's unprofessional.

My husband is a lover of salad, quiche etc. and as the driver drinks J2O or similar. I always order a meat meal and a pint of bitter. You can guess where the meals get placed every time!

Not the point of your thread but it drives me mad at a table of 2 when waiter asks you who ordered what.. they should know, they took the order. I used to work as a waiter many years ago and it was just a note in the order docket to remind you, like M beside male order etc. It's different at a big busy table.

If I'm out I'll order a coke with my dinner, and my DH will order a Diet Coke. He is overweight, I am not. I always get given the Diet Coke, it's a running joke between us.

It’s poor/lazy service, there is a way professional wait staff take an order and then ensure each person gets the right meal.
