Adult child recording videos of her day to keep private

Hi, my dd is 23 and lives at home with me and dh. We have never had any sort of concerns over her and she seems a very normal 23 yo. She works full time since graduating uni etc. she has recently started taking videos of her day, stuff like what we are having for dinner, bits of cleaning and when she goes out etc etc very blog style similar to what you maybe see on TikTok or YouTube. I asked if she had started something like that and she said no it's just for herself to stay motivated.

I could understand the motivated bit if it was say gym progress or maybe weight loss or progress with regards to say a renovation, etc you get my drift. But this is just for her general life and she is also just storing these videos. I have no issue with this but i was a bit surprised and it has confused me a bit. Is this something that sounds like usual behaviour to you?

Actually I can understand it totally. It's a documenting style she sees a lot on social media, and instead of publishing it she's keeping it for herself. Not that different to seeing a lot of anything and giving it a try for yourself, but not being ready to share with your friends. Or writing a diary but not wanting anyone else to read it.

PuffingPuffin · 29/07/2023 18:53

Any mental health history? I work with people who keep similar "records" as a way of managing their intrusive thoughts, usually driven by OCD.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 29/07/2023 18:54

Yh it's a video diary. Unless you have other concerns I would consider it generational.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 29/07/2023 18:59

My bet would be she is uploading it somewhere and doesn't want to tell you as she doesn't want you to ask to see the account.

BeautifulWar · 29/07/2023 19:01

Would you think keeping a written journal was odd? This is the same thing, just a different medium.

This was my thought.

Probably this.

But even if she isn't uploading all she is doing is keeping a diary. The way we do things has changed massively over the years.

BonjourCrisette · 29/07/2023 19:10

She's an adult so I would say it's none of your business!

DifferentUsername1 · 29/07/2023 19:12

@BonjourCrisette I can't be concerned over her because she is an adult? If she isn't posting it and if she is posting is - She is also recording in our family home and it sometimes has us in it etc so that would be unreasonable

Maybe she is uploading it but doesn't want to tell you about her channel because you're an intrusive person.

bibbityboppityboo · 29/07/2023 19:13

My sister has a private account she does this with - little daily videos. No one can subscribe or see the videos, only her. Keeps her motivated and she loves it! She's 25 so a similar age.

I think it would be fine to ask her not to have you in her videos. But she isn't a child and she can record whatever she wants of her own activities and do with the videos whatever she sees fit. Of course you can be concerned. I just can't really understand why you are. It doesn't sound like she is recording anything inappropriate. I mean, cleaning and dinner? Where's the harm?

Boomboom22 · 29/07/2023 19:43

It's a diary, are diaries weird? I couldn't be bothered personally but it's not really unusual just newer tech surely.

forsythg · 29/07/2023 19:44

I think consulting strangers on opinions on something harmless that your adult daughter is doing, is what’s weird and not normal tbh

Xrays · 29/07/2023 19:49

I bet she’s posting it on what’s app or snap chat or whatever it is they all use. My dd is 20 and will randomly record / photo stuff and then post it to all her friends etc. It’s all very normal (and boring)!

Zanatdy · 29/07/2023 19:52

I’d also say she’s probably uploading it but doesn’t want to say

EstieGreenwood · 29/07/2023 23:18

I agree she’s probably posting it and doesn’t want you to know, but either way it seems like an interesting video diary for her to be able to look back on in the future.

The most worrying part of your post is that you’d only understand why your daughter wants to document her life if it was for gym or weight loss progress. How sad!

SBHon · 29/07/2023 23:25

Ask her about it.

This post has just reminded me I used to like using One Second Everyday as a video diary. I’m going to start up again.

Wtf!? 😂

Pinkitydrinkity · 29/07/2023 23:30

I don’t see the problem with it tbh.

Wtf!? 😂

You don't think a person who is trying to police what a 23 year old does might be a bit intrusive?
