Terrified of smear results

I had a smear on Monday, how long do you think I’ll be waiting for results? Nurse did say 4-6 weeks but I’m wondering if that’ll be less if they find something sinister?

I have symptoms. Severe bloating, back pain, pelvic/stomach pain, random bleeding (although only once) and peeing all the time. Literally every 30 minutes. I am so scared I feel physically sick. Have very small children and I can’t bare the thought of not being here for them. Any advice?

I'm so sorry to hear this. Did you tell the nurse your symptoms?

I know if you make a GP appt and present with symptoms that could be cancer, you would start the 2-week wait pathway, but I don't know if this would happen if you had a smear and just told the nurse about the symptoms you had been having.

Could you ring your gp surgery to explain this and see if you can make a gp appt?

Smearfear1 · 27/07/2023 21:17

No, stupidly I didn’t. I did see a gp immediately after to test for a UTI which they said was negative. I guess after that I just thought I’d wait for the results.

See your GP do not wait for the results OP.

Thelonelygiraffe · 27/07/2023 21:23

Not stupid at all! If you're worried, ring the GP tomorrow and make an appt 💐

The vast majority of women who think they have gynae cancer don't. But please ring to set your mind at rest.

dementedpixie · 27/07/2023 21:25

A smear is only a screening test so don't rely on that if you have symptoms. Please see your gp instead

Ifonlyicouldseethelight · 27/07/2023 21:25

@Smearfear1 if it's any consolation I have all those symptoms and have done for years and I definitely don't have cancer. However, any symptoms that aren't right for you, see your GP for further investigation.

Smearfear1 · 27/07/2023 21:30

@Ifonlyicouldseethelight

Really? Do they know what’s causing your symptoms? I do have PCOS but I have had 3 children in 5 years and regular periods until quite recently, but then I have been through some stress recently . My back pain is also in my upper back not lower. I just can’t eat much, if I eat a sandwich I’m bloated for hours as if I’ve just eaten a roast. & the frequent peeing is hard to ignore, it is constant.

Diabetes?

Smearfear1 · 27/07/2023 21:35

@dementedpixie nope, urine was tested for glucose and there was none.

@Smearfear1 as already stated PLEASE dont wait for a smear to tell you anything - unless the sample tests positive for HPV they dont even look at your cell sample these days. ALWAYS see the GP if theres anything concerning you (although none of which you have said are significant red flags for cervical cancer anyway so i would put your mind at rest about that) ....there is very likely something the GP can help you with so its not worth torturing yourself about.

RuthW · 27/07/2023 21:37

Cervical screening is for cervical cancer. Go and see your doctor about ovarian cancer. You symptoms are probably nothing

Smearfear1 · 27/07/2023 21:39

really? When I googled (I know 🙄) the first thing that comes up is ovarian cancer and the nhs website lists all my symptoms as symptoms!

a smear doesn't test for ovarian cancer!!!

Jinglybangly · 27/07/2023 21:41

Ovarian cancer and cervical cancer are different. They won't even look for cervical cancer anymore unless you test positive for HPV which most don't.

Make a GP appointment asap.

Smearfear1 · 27/07/2023 21:43

Ok thank you

As PP have said, a smear is a screening test and not appropriate if you have symptoms. If your urine dip was negative I'd also consider going for an STI screen. Those symptoms could match with pelvic inflammatory disease

Jinglybangly · 27/07/2023 21:51

I got results in about 10 days a couple of months ago.

crew2022 · 27/07/2023 21:51

Try not to think the worst because there are literally lots of explanations for your symptoms which are very treatable.
However you must get this properly diagnosed so you can treat whatever the cause is.

JorisBonson · 27/07/2023 21:52

I have all of those symptoms with endometriosis. All my recent smears have come back clear.
