If you live in London or nearby towns… what type of property do you own?

Just one of those annoying posts to ask people:

  • what is your age, household income
  • if you own a property, what type of property is it? Do you have a big mortgage?
  • do you have kids?

I am not a journalist btw, just interested to get a glimpse into others lives ;)

We are a family with 1 small DC, late 30s, renting a 2 bed flat in London suburbs, looking to buy a modest 2 bed house.

OP posts:

Outer London end of terrace.
Joint income around £60k - which wouldn't be enough to derive the mortgage but for the big inheritance we had which enabled us to buy outright some years ago.
40s / 50s, young adult kids who only live here part time.

Hufflepods · 27/07/2023 20:14

Border of zone 2/3 large period 2 bed flat with garden. Early 30s with a toddler and baby in the way.
Joint income of about 95k, ‘large mortgage’ is debatable I guess, it’s 250k which is nothing compared to what it would be if we bought our property now as we did a lot of work to it.

nc14 · 27/07/2023 20:16

38, £200k+, 4-bed semi in SW London (Z3), small mortgage, one DC.

Bootoagoose123 · 27/07/2023 20:18

In my 40s, on c. £100k, Zone 2, North London, but edge of a council estate. Detached 2-bed non-standard property (architect-designed house). Just me. Yes, I have a big mortgage!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 27/07/2023 20:22

Zone 2 (the dodgy end!), 4/5 bed detached, £200k income, three kids, eye watering mortgage.

You will get such an enormous range of replies, it probably won't tell you much other than people have different lives. I am 4 bedroom semi in affluent outer London boroughs, late 40s/early 50s married couple, 2 teenage DC, mortgage paid off, £175k joint income.

Letterposter · 27/07/2023 20:27

Household income 115k
Currently a 2 bed but about to move into a 5 bed next week

it will be difficult for a few years but worth it, especially as we have potential for further promotions. This is a big factor, stretch yourselves if you have that potential

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/07/2023 20:53

I’m mid-30s, DH is mid-40s. Childfree, not planning on changing that. We have a modest two bedroom semi in a leafy Zone 3 SE suburb. Mortgage about £260k. Household income about £200k. We love our ‘hood, our neighbours, our fab garden, that we live within walking distance of several of the friends we love best and thus get to see them several times a week.

We did at one point almost fall into the social climbing aspirational “buy big house for social kudos” thing that I think many affluent Londoners feel pressure about, but then gave our heads a wobble: we have everything and all the space we need in the house we have and prefer to spend money on socialising, holidays and having brilliant fun with our friends rather than serving a bigger mortgage.

hippityhophop · 27/07/2023 20:54

Late 20s and early 30s, household income of 115k

2 bed maisonette. Average mortgage.

1 daughter

Echobelly · 27/07/2023 20:56

North London, outer Zone, we earn c£120k a year, we're in 40s, two kids, tween and teen.

Large 4 bed terrace near a tube station, bought 8 years ago mortgage paid off recently due to inheritance. Honestly, even on £120k I think we'd have had to have moved out of London to get a family sized home had it not been the case that we had two smaller properties to sell (both mine, both only affordable due to inheritance) to buy the house. As it was we were able to buy it with a mortgage that was only about 30% of the price of the house.

khakitrousers · 27/07/2023 20:57

Joint income c £140k depending on bonuses/ freelance work. 4 bed Victorian terrace zone 2/3 borders. 3 DC. Mortgage a painful £460k. Both mid 40s.

Littleme2023 · 27/07/2023 21:07
