I already have a very fine and thin hair 🥶
Am I going to be bald? 😭

Please tell me this is normal, I already googled, made it seem it’s fine, but I’d like to know it from someone how’s been through this.
Did the hair grew back?
How bad did it/ will this get?

How much weight have you lost? Extreme or sudden weight loss can cause hair loss aswell.

mynameiscalypso · 26/07/2023 18:33

I do. It's the first sign that I'm not eating enough calories to sustain basic human functions. It resolves when I eat more.

Oysterbabe · 26/07/2023 18:34

What method are you using to lose weight?

NoTeaNoShade · 26/07/2023 18:35

My hair went very thin when I was on low/no carb. Once I went back to normal, my hair bounced back. I don't know for sure if it was related, but I noticed a lot of shedding.

How much weight have you lost?

I don’t know exatly, because I don’t weight myself (I get too hung up on numbers and it messes everything) but I’d say around 40 kg, in 11 months.

What method are you using to lose weight?

Just eating less, working out more. No diet. I’m not super healthy, just don’t eat insane amounts anymore.

I’ve lost 2 stone since February and my hair is now so dry and brittle. My periods are completely out of whack for the first time in my life (bar pregnancy and breastfeeding) as well - my cycle is 2 and a half weeks long 😑. I’m doing 5 days calorie deficit (weekends I pay less mind) and gym once a week, so definitely not going ott. I’ve had my thyroid and hormone level checked, just waiting on the results, but I swear it better come back with something because I don’t want to admit I was falling apart less at a size 18!

ohtowinthelottery · 26/07/2023 19:01

I once lost 1 1/2 stone in 2 weeks due to illness and a couple of months later my hair started to fall out and became so thin I had to have it cut short. It did grown back curly though eventually.

alwaysacatastrophe · 26/07/2023 19:03

When I had weight loss surgery, I lost so much hair it was unbelievable. After about 3 months, it slowed down and then after I stopped losing weight rapidly about a year after my op, it started getting thicker and growing normally again.

Are you getting all the vitamins and minerals you need in your diet?

ExPreschoolTrustee · 26/07/2023 19:17

I was v I'll once and lost a lot of hair about 3 months afterwards - look up telogen effluvium - it grows back

Murdoch1949 · 27/07/2023 17:16

Extreme hair loss on very restricted diets, like Lighter life, is normal. It grows back. But it's unhealthy.

Snowpaw · 27/07/2023 17:24

I've noticed my hair thinning in the last few weeks. I've been strength training since end of March. Lost a dress size from 16 to 14 so far. I have very thick hair to begin with so I have a bit of a buffer!

I definitely am not starving or malnourished - I have plenty of protein and regular substantial meals. Sleeping about 8 hours a night. Taking care of myself. Will see how it goes.

SwirlyShirly · 27/07/2023 17:35

I had surgery in February to help me lose weight (nearly 7 stone so far) and I'm definitely thinning, although I had very thick hair to start off so I'm not too worried yet. Try upping your protein and taking biotin supplement. You can also try a rosemary oil on your scalp to encourage growth.

Hankunamatata · 27/07/2023 17:37

Are you taking vitamin and mineral supplements as you might not getting everything from your diet

BrioNotBiro · 27/07/2023 17:40

Are you low in iron OP? That can affect hair loss. And as others have said if you have had a general anaesthetic or had a baby (telogen effluvium).

ILoveTeeeeeea · 27/07/2023 17:49

Iron deficiency can cause hair loss

Albatross26 · 27/07/2023 18:03

This sounds like classic telogen effluvium which often happens after things like extreme weight loss, surgery, accident etc. For most people it should be self resolving. Mine unfortunately has been ongoing for two years with no obvious trigger, I've no idea how I'm not bald. Saw A dermatologist who prescribed minoxidil but I haven't had the courage to take it yet. Supplements might help, don't waste money on fancy serums etc, nothing you put on your scalp can change the growth/shedding cycle. Dermatologist confirmed they're all essentially snake oil!

bellac11 · 27/07/2023 18:06

Yes I have lost weight pre and post WLS.

Its not that fast (in WLS terms) 6 stone in 9 months in total, but at the 3 month mark after the op the hair loss started. It is quite a lot. Im at 6 months now.

You just have to keep the faith, make sure you take your supplements, it apparently starts growing back/not falling out around the 9-12 month mark after surgery

Talk to your hairdresser about it and she can do a cut that gives you more volume and shape and disguises it as much as possible.

TheCatterall · 27/07/2023 18:35

See a GP. get bloods done. See what’s in deficit.

Don’t just rely on us armchair medical experts. ;)

Take adequate vitamin and mineral supplements.
