Is it suitable?

is it worth going?

Dd is asking but I’m thinking no?

I have just been with a 6 year old. My mistake.
I don’t think it was a bad mistake as she sat still throughout and claimed to have enjoyed it, but it really wasn’t for her.
I was expecting more of a family film that worked on multiple levels but it was really not that, it was an adult film about feminism and dolls.

My DD (22yo) loved it and says it is not really suitable for a small child. She says most of the storyline will go over their heads - it is not a cartoony pink and lovely film at all. It's a 12A bc of the themes (patriarchy, existentialism) rather than (for example) swearing. She thought a 10yo yes, perhaps with a discussion afterwards of the themes, but not a 5yo.

I feel asleep in it. but "I don't have a penis/vagina" to workmen? not for 5 year olds

ArthnoldManacatsaman · 26/07/2023 14:00

I saw it last night. We had planned to go in the afternoon but changed our minds and booked a later screening specifically because of everything I’ve read about bored children at this film.
Please don’t take a 5 year old, at the very least she will be bored and you’ll have wasted money on her ticket, and depending on how fidgety she gets she might spoil it for other people and/or you might end up leaving early

It's not a children's film.

EmmaR0305 · 26/07/2023 14:02

I saw it yesterday and personally do not think a 5 year old would be that interested in it. A bit too grown up for that age

SleepingStandingUp · 26/07/2023 14:03

I think most of it will go over her head to be honest
She'll like the first bit in Barbie world with the singing and dancing, she might like the funny bit in the real world, she'll enjoy the singing towards the end. It depends how she is if it gets a bit boring.

I will say tho, she won't be the only 5 yo on there.

ilovemydogmore · 26/07/2023 14:04

It's not a kids film. Why not watch the dozen or so animated Barbie films with her?

Justcallmebebes · 26/07/2023 14:21

I took my DGD aged 8. I told her before we went she would probably be bored. I was right. A lot of it went over her head and she was bored rigid after about half an hour

It’s not a film for children. I don’t even really think any of it would appeal, maybe the first half an hour? But it’s long, and I found it boring in parts. There’s a lot of repetition of the same kind of points and several long monologues. In fact, it kind of got a bit nightmarish, not in a frightening way but in a ‘being stuck in a bad dream’ way. I liked elements of it but I think kids under 10 would be bored.
