To think neighbour should wear headphones for work noise

Hello,
I live in a mid-terraced house. I work from home everyday Mon-Fri and neighbour works in the room next to mine. I can't currently change rooms as very small house but moving bathroom in near future so this may become a possibility in 6-12 months.

I use headphones for all work calls. Neighbour is a film editor and doesn't use headphones. Plays film clips very loudly and edits (rewinds scenes and replays over and over). Any work calls are loud speaker through the computer (no headphones). AIBU to think he should use headphones? I can hear the noise over my headphones during work calls.

I would just keep shouting through the wall and joining in his conversation he will soon get the hint

DiscoDeborah · 25/07/2023 22:57

Have you been round to let them know how much you can hear?

User657891 · 25/07/2023 22:57

I haven't been round as don't like to dictate and wasn't sure if I was being unreasonable

It sounds like a really poorly designed building -its not really his fault - but unfortunate for you.

Unfortunately this was my life in a flat - it’s so annoying.
Might not be an option, but for the sheer peace I’d see if moving is viable.

I don't think you can force him to wear headphones, but you could certainly knock on the door, explain how much of his work you can hear and ask if it's something he would consider. It's possible he hasn't realised how much you can hear in your house.

minipie · 25/07/2023 23:24

I expect he has no idea how much you can hear. Tell him .

Chlora · 25/07/2023 23:59

Tell him, on the assumption he had no idea how loud it is.

There may even be confidentiality issues. If you can quote lines from the film he's working on, it may give him pause for thought. But start by asking nicely. If he is not hearing you, he may well have no idea how much you can hear him.
