Is it too young or am I over reacting ?

Local to us it's 13 with consent 16 without

onlynotafan · 25/07/2023 22:45

I've got 3 girls but they aren't even teens yet well my stance is it would be an easy no. I remember being that age and was still playing with dolls and well being a child. If she's having it done so young is she always going to be parading around in crop tops, as that's the hype for the piercing to be 'seen' then there's the aftercare would she be mature enough to follow guidance to prevent infection - I think it's ridiculous tbh parents should parent and not give in to this nonsense l.

I think it's too young but if she takes the jewellery out the hole will heal. It's not permanent.

I had mine done at 21 and it went septic. I still have a scar

I'm quite relaxed with piercing - DD 12yo has a few including the top of her ear and her nose. She has asked for her belly button and I've said no for now

My 13 year old has her septum and 2 x earlobes in each ear. Belly button seems a bit much though but probably because that really hurt for a long time afterwards for me personally…

I am honestly horrified. I am older than a lot of people on here so maybe it's that but multiple piercings on a child is vile.Belly button piercing seem far more sexual than ears and I wasn't allowed ears until I turned 16. Hey ho. I'll go and find some pearls to clutch.

I'm in my early thirties with 3 small daughters, I totally agree with you. I'd be mortified if any of my 3 got it done at such a young age... I have had piercing in my ears and nose but tbh apart from my lobes everything else was temporary or a fad and was removed as soon as I got fed up. I don't think it's natural for humans to put holes in their bodies but then again on ears it kind of works.

OrangeKettle · 25/07/2023 22:47

I am fairly relaxed with piercings. I have about ten in my ears, used to have belly button and I have both nipples done.

My daughter is 12 and wants hers done. She’s looked everything up about it, pros and cons. I’m still in two minds, but it’s not a straight no.

OrangeKettle · 25/07/2023 22:48

My 12 year old wants her belly button done, I mean!!

5128gap · 25/07/2023 22:48

Missing the point, but are they back in fashion? Had mine for 30 years now and thought it was a sign of my old age! Not that I'd be showing it off these days, but nice to be know I was in fashion again! And yes, too young.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/07/2023 22:49

My DD had her ears pierced at Superdrug and they were turning away girls who wanted their second ear piercing under 14

Bluewater1 · 25/07/2023 22:50

Far too young

blahblahblah1654 · 25/07/2023 22:50

I had mine done at 14 with parental permission. I do think anything below 16 is too young though.

Curseofthenation · 25/07/2023 22:50

I had mine done at 13. I don't mind it now at 33 but I can't get rid of it. It doesn't heal up. I do wonder if that is partly because I had it done quite young - maybe not though. I don't like having two piercing holes on my stomach so I wear the piercing.

TheaBrandt · 25/07/2023 22:51

I have teens they both want it done but it’s a hard no. I’m relaxed about ears but this is next level. It’s quite sexual somehow and a far bigger deal than ears. I would be judging the parent of an 11 year old that allowed it hard.

xxalhxx · 25/07/2023 22:51

My mum wouldn't let me get my belly done till I was 16 even then I still didn't get in done until I was 18

blahblahblah1654 · 25/07/2023 22:52

I'm surprised it's still so popular to her a belly button piercing. I don't know why, but I didn't think it was particularly fashionable anymore.

They definitely went to a shop and had it done properly. Quite a well known place too. Mum said she wanted her daughter to feel she could go to her now she’s in big school and not see her as against her with things like this. It’s ‘just a piercing’ idk how I feel about it!

DD is 10. I did not know this was a "thing" / fad / fashion. Personally I had mine done when I was 23 (and re-pierced after pregnancy).

When you say "shop" do you mean a Claire's Accessories type high street retailer or a tattoo/piercing studio?

Remaker · 25/07/2023 23:02

My DD got her second ear piercing at 15 (with parental permission as you need that where I live for any piercing under 16). And got her nose pierced at 16. She’s not expressed an interest in any other piercing but it will be up to her now as she’s 17.

Your friend is going to have an interesting time parenting a teenager if she feels her only option is to agree to everything they want from age 11.

user14728317878988 · 25/07/2023 23:12

My immediate reaction would be that it's too young. I did get mine done at 12 as did a fair few of the girls I was at school with. Never caused me any issues and still have it 18 years later. One of my friends had hers done at 11, but we were at primary school and it seemed crazy young at the time. It seems a little more acceptable if they are at high school.

10HailMarys · 25/07/2023 23:13

It's way, way too young, and no reputable piercer would ever agree to do it. If they're prepared to pierce an 11-year-old's belly button there is no way they're a decent piercer.

An 11-year-old hasn't even stopped growing and shouldn't be getting any piercings other than ear-lobes, even with parental permission.

I speak as someone with a pierced belly button, several tattoos, 10 ear piercings and formerly a tongue piercing, so I'm not anti-piercing but a navel piercing for an 11-year-old is incredibly unwise.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 25/07/2023 23:35

One of the girls in DDs class had it done just before the summer holidays started, this is year 4, 9 years old!

DD told me in a kind of awestruck isn't it wonderful way and I just said, well every parent makes different decisions, my decision is you're too young.

dearJayne · 26/07/2023 00:45

I was 12 when I got mine done in the 90s. Dd wants her nose done but she's 4 so no but end of P7 she can have it done but for secondary she can have what she wants pierced.

Mamai90 · 26/07/2023 00:53

The main issue for me would be the risk of infection. When my friends had theirs done when we were teens a couple of them got infected, I think its more of a risk with that piercing.

LordSalem · 26/07/2023 01:31

Had mine done at 15 with a family member attending to give consent. Ridiculous to get it done that young. There's no need. Teenage growth spurts and all. I went back to the same studio 2 years later for a second belly button piercing, the guy gave me £5 off because I'd grabbed my boobs tight with both arms as he did it. Sick fuck.

LordSalem · 26/07/2023 01:35

Also to point out, it's not likely to reject just due to growing but might cause lightning bolt stretch marks. I never grew taller or put much weight on during my teen years after having it done, but pregnancy at 22 blew out the lightning bolts I've still got 11 years later. Growth spurts or weight gain would've done the same.
