To ask for your perimenopause period advice

Posting here for traffic.

I am 50 and just had my first very delayed period- usual cycle around 24 days but now on day 30 & no sign but I am getting period pains & have been for over a week but no bleed. Also bloated, sore boobs etc.

Is it that oestrogen levels aren’t high enough to produce a bleed? And does it settle down? I feel like I don’t know what is going on - am about to try HRT again but not sure now when to start it as was going to start on day 1 of my cycle but should I just go for it and start anyway?

I feel so clueless despite reading loads about what is going on. Any advice?

No advice but in a similar boat, it's been ages since my last period (I don't track them) and I've been feeling like I'm about to come on for over a week now but still nothing. I'm 48 and my periods have been haywire for a while now (which is why I don't track) but not had this particular issue before so am similarly clueless!

@HerAvatar I hate that feeling of not really knowing what the hell is going on!!!

Dr Louise newson has quite a but of into and does great podcast. The balance app is free and good

I ended up with mirena in as my periods were everywhere and so heavy. I wish I'd had it put in years ago. No period and mild pmt. I take estrogen to top up

NooNakedJacuzziness · 25/07/2023 16:03

It's so annoying. I didn't have a period for 3 months (but felt like you OP, bloated and period pains) then the last month I've had 2! I'm keeping track and also going to ask about HRT as joint pain is doing my head in

SweetLathyrus · 25/07/2023 16:09

@Croissantsetchampignons I had the same issue with when to start the HRT cycle based on the instructions in the boxes (estrogen patch and progesterone capsules).

In the end, I spoke to my gp who said ignore the natural cycle I was expecting/waiting for and to just put the patch on and start the capsules 14 days later. I suspect from her response that this happens lot, and the instructions are written by the uninitiated! This may or may not be the optimum way to go, but it worked for me.

So, don't take my advice, go back to your GP/HRT prescriber and ask what they would suggest.

This is me now too 😞
I am 50. My period is 8 days late and I have a log of period pains and cramps, feeling sick etc. and no actual period. Lots of hot flushes too.
I did see my doctor many months ago but she said no to HRT for hot flushes as I still had periods.

Your doctor is useless ClaudiaAndTheCauldron! Look up the NICE prescribing guidelines for HRT and go in armed next time, your periods most certainly do not need to have stopped for you to have/need HRT Flowers

I often wonder about this. I am still on the pill ( aged 47) and have asked about staying on it and they have said fine till age 55.

now. I have had to change my pill over due to continuing bleeding. Not much just always there if u see what I mean.

I switched over to something different and that stopped the bleeding for a while but it back to one bleeding ( only notice it on the loo roll kind of bleeding )

wondering if I should just come off. But then I’m not sure what horrors that could unfold.

Croissantsetchampignons · 25/07/2023 19:35

@SweetLathyrus thanks, that’s really good to know actually- I booked an appt with the meno nurse for next week!

@ClaudiaAndTheCauldron its rubbish isn’t it 💐

@ClaudiaAndTheCauldron my GP gave me low dose citalopram for the hot flushes… total game changer for me!

jeaux90 · 25/07/2023 20:17

Get on HRT now OP.

I'm 42 and just started HRT for sweating, painful joints and brain fog! Doctor couldn't have been more helpful. You need to find a new doc!

SweetLathyrus · 26/07/2023 06:55

@ClaudiaAndTheCauldron that is awful - hot flushes and night sweats can be debilitating, definitely go and see a different Dr - and be aware, female GPs are not the automatic 'go to'.

@Croissantsetchampignons brilliant, getting HRT right is a process, so keep going back and asking questions - very few of us are experts (or, come to that, have any idea until we are in it!).

HerAvatar · 26/07/2023 18:36

Still nothing here, had awful cramps earlier and it feels like my cervix is bruised, having to sit down really gingerly. Getting a bit worried now, sorry for hijacking your thread Croissantsetchampignons Sad

Croissantsetchampignons · 30/07/2023 11:45

@HerAvatar my period finally arrived around 12 days late- suspect it’s going to be heavy too- hopefully yours will arrive too!

Did you never get bloat or sore boobs linked to your periods before?
Is that a brand new experience?
