Tat and public announcements of private matters

Inspired by a thread on public proposals I wonder why we're becoming a society of public displays of private matters. Pregnancy announcements, gender reveals, baby showers, public proposals, renewal of vows.

Weddings, christenings and funerals and being drowned out by all the tat on social media.

Flame away, but interested in your thoughts.

American culture is all about me me me look at me, and unfortunately the english are obsessed with American culture, it’s less the case in wales and Scotland.

Purely for the persons social media platforms, it’s a huge shift in culture that if it’s not on your SM it didn’t happen.

People, especially those of the younger generation, feel extremely pressured to have accounts full of carefully cultivated ‘moments’

I'm in Scotland and shite like baby showers, gender reveals, nursery graduations and school proms are quite common here too.

Demolishthecreamcake · 24/07/2023 16:50

Oh I forgot about nursery graduations :-)

I don't think any of this is brand new though.

I’m quite old now and the only social media site I use is Facebook. I’m constantly shocked at the amount of performative nonsense my family and friends choose to disclose, never mind the privacy issues, especially around their children. Their every move seems to be documented, photographed and shared
