How terrible is Sainsbury's wrapping paper with sticky labels

SunshineAndFizz · 22/07/2023 17:05

First world problems, I know.

Just bought some wrapping paper from Sainsbury's and instead of being wrapped in plastic it has recyclable stickers. Great idea - who doesn't want to help the environment.

However dear reader, they are the worst stickers in the world. Definitely no easy peel in sight. I absolutely could not remove the stickers without completely shredding the wrapping paper. What a mess!

Am I missing something? A trick to remove them without the paper resembling confetti by the end?

Or do we just accept these now. It's the best we can do, if we care about the environment. Like paper straws.

Yes, bloody nightmare that stuff. Some peels away some tears it’s v annoying even just 2 bits rather than 4 it’s very frustrating having to cut a big bit off before you even start!!

Spendonsend · 22/07/2023 17:07

I think there is extra paper designed to be sacrifical.

NeedToBookAGetaway · 22/07/2023 17:08

Tesco is the same they give extra paper for protection. But i shredded so much!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 22/07/2023 17:08

Yep, they add something like 15cm extra paper to the roll in acknowledgement that it's shit, rather than just using some actually peelable stickers.

SaturdayGiraffe · 22/07/2023 17:10

v off way of doing it

bluebaggins · 22/07/2023 17:13

Warm the labels up with a hairdryer - come straight off

Santa24689claus · 22/07/2023 17:14

I agree. It's awful. I won't be buying their paper again

DandelionBurdockAndGin · 22/07/2023 17:17

I think you have to lose some paper to them which is frustrating as I think it ends up being more than ideal.

Though my issue with lack of plastic wrapping is we bought it not really thinking on walk home -(don't drive) and it started raining lost a lot despite trying to get it dry. Buy elsewhere now.

HouseIsOnFire · 22/07/2023 17:18

The paper itself is rubbish too, so thin!

wirehearts · 22/07/2023 17:20

Same problem here.

I’m not getting on with the bananas wrapped in the stickiest stickers ever, as they are difficult to get off, stick to everything and can’t be recycled because they stick to the recycling bags and rip them. Might just be me though!

Blackbyrd · 22/07/2023 17:20

Would be far better to use a raffia tie or something!

wirehearts · 22/07/2023 17:21

Our council won’t take recyclable wrapping paper either as they say they can’t tell the difference between that and non recyclable, and that most paper is too thin.

AmericasfavoritefightingFrenchman · 22/07/2023 17:22

Yes! M&S and waitrose manage to have peelable stickers- it can’t be that hard!

JMSA · 22/07/2023 17:24

YABU (tongue in cheek).
The worst stickers in the world are surely TK Maxx stickers. The ones that peel in different sections. They're horrendous at Christmastime when I need to remove several at once before wrapping!

Alwayswonderedwhy · 22/07/2023 17:24

I'm glad it's not just me. I thought I'd got a faulty batch. Why are the stickers not easy peel!

Why would you need to shred any more than what the sticker is actually touching? I've used that paper plenty of times and yes, it can be a pain, but I'm not it's thread worthy.

I had damage to a card from M&S as the sticker wouldnt peel off cleanly. Yes great idea - just needs more work to refine.

Omg!

Thank you so much for this thread @SunshineAndFizz
I nearly started this exact thread at Christmas but I was so outraged, I didn't dare.
I'd have been banned for swearing, even though you're allowed to swear on mn! 😆🤬🤬 🤬

@bluebaggins If that works, you're a genius!!!!

bluebaggins · 22/07/2023 18:06

@Rogue1001MNer it does work! I used it at Christmas with loads of rolls, soooooo much better than trying to tear the roll to get it off.

Cookerhood · 22/07/2023 18:18

Funnily enough im about to wrap some presents with it this evening. Will try a hairdryer.

I wasn't keen on the banana stickers but I've just been on holiday in a part of Europe where supermarket bananas are sold in a clingfilm wrapped cardboard box . . . Keener on the stickers than I was!

Do like the card stickers. Makes lots of sense.

Titchyfeep · 23/07/2023 14:26

If you look on the label it tells you they provide extra paper to account for this

NannyNanmum · 16/09/2023 17:16

Omg just bought this wrapping paper again completely forgetting how awful it is. The peel off stickers do not peel off. It's a terrible design. Won't buy again. 😡

CGibby · 30/03/2025 08:29

Just tried Sainsbury Wrapping paper, it has taken 25 mins to get the stickers off unwrapped to first sheet, the rest of it will be going recycling, never to be bought again.

Friend used to work there. Apparently people were peeling off the stickers and sticking on different ones to get stuff cheaper so they had to make them very hard to get off. I hate, hate it on the picture frame glass.
