To be fed up with certain types of men on the tube?

Just that really. I think I’m fairly considerate of other people’s space but have noticed that certain men, particularly wealthy, older white men, feel they have an entitlement to spread liberally into the seats on either side of them. It seems more pronounced when there’s a woman sitting next to them (not saying I believe this is necessarily sexual, more that the man in question feels more entitled to the space than anyone else).

realise this is rather low on the scale of things, but I’ve had a run of said men on transport recently and my partner was on a train the other day and heard two men (strangers) making fairly disgusting sexual comments about a woman (also a stranger to them) who had just left the train after their spreading into her seat.

absolutely realise not all men are like this but you know, there’s a type.

also - often the same type - the sort that seem to carry around bottled up aggression and let it out at random at strangers. I saw a guy yelling at a girl with Downs on the tube the other day because she got in his way. Telling her she shouldn’t be allowed to use the train.

sorry - just a bit of a moan!

Yanbu

Also hate the standing space invader!

I had a new pair of white trainers and some dick got on and managed to stand on my foot 4 times covering my lovely new traines in dirt.
I have size 4 feet so hardly sode show bob clogging up the aisle.
My tiny revenge was standing up in such a way i blocked him from getting my seat and someone else sat down.

Disagree it’s the wealthy older white ones. They are the most considerate ime. It’s the younger ones.
one newish thing is watching something on speaker rather than ear phones and these are often Eastern European men going into work in building site wear.
that is annoying at 7am

cocksstrideintheevening · 22/07/2023 14:52

Never encountered any of these scenarios. Get on tube, get off.

sashagabadon · 22/07/2023 14:53

The more you use tube the more you see stuff! I use it almost daily and have done for 40 years
but generally I think people are generally super polite and nice and courteous and that’s every type of person

That’s true and thank you for posting this because it’s nice to be reminded of the good occasions, and actually when the man yelled at the downs girl, me and another woman did stick up for her. I think I’m just feeling a bit dispirited today as I’ve had a run of particularly bad journeys.

That’s interesting, and actually the kind of man I’ve experienced is possibly down to the fact that a particular stretch of the tube I have to travel through daily goes through a wealthy area (not my area, but part of my commute).

Thank you! I’m glad it’s not just me. Sorry about your trainers! How annoying!

I’d love to know how to travel like this - sounds dreamy.

I don't see what this has to do with older who're men. I've never noticed that specific demographic do that.

Do any other toes of men do it?

Handbagger99 · 22/07/2023 15:05

I disagree it's wealthy, older white men. The complete opposite are usually the issue.

GreenWheat · 22/07/2023 15:10

There are many types of inconsiderate tube users. Manspreaders are definitely one of them, but I wouldn't say it's rich old white men particularly. Backpack smackers, sniffers and people whose headphones don't prevent their awful music leaking out are right up there too.

YES!

Thistooshallpsss · 22/07/2023 15:15

Since I’ve gone grey and look older I am nearly always offered a seat on the tube as is my husband who definitely looks older these days so I have been grateful for the general courtesy I’ve encountered. Doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen of course just there are lots of polite helpful people of all sorts as well.

Fucking hell. Ever heard of racism?

MissFancyDay · 22/07/2023 15:18

It's all men, all types.

TheCyclingGorilla · 22/07/2023 15:30

Builders on the Jubilee manspreading and drinking cheap beer at 4pm thinking they are the bee's knees. 🙄

Nuttkin · 22/07/2023 15:51

In emerald, I can't recall ever encountering manspreading. The biggest issue is people putting bags in seats.

I just ask them to sit down. You expect me to stand uncomfortably for my whole journey so that you don't have to sit next to anyone? Nah.

Hibiscrubbed · 22/07/2023 16:20

What sort of man was this particular peach? What a cunt.

Stichintime · 22/07/2023 16:36

If I need to sit down next to a spreader, either on a bus or tube I no longer say 'excuse me' or make myself small, I just sit down. They soon move.

BlibBlobBloo · 22/07/2023 16:43

I match them by spreading my knees wide open too. Obviously I don't wear dresses or skirts. I've never understood why men need to socially distance their knees.

MissFancyDay · 22/07/2023 15:18

yes, young foreign man on an incredibly packed train had his backpack on the seat next to him taking up the full seat. he could clearly see the train was busy and someone could use that seat. absolutely no fkin consideration. So I sat on the seat and lent on his bag with all my weight hoping I squash the contents! he still didn't move it.
I honestly can't believe how some people especially men have no consideration for others.

tentonine · 23/02/2024 00:40

I disagree with the OP, I usually find it's poor looking young black men that do this rather than wealthy looking white men.
