To just need to eat CONSTANTLY in pregnancy

About 6 weeks today and I cannot stop eating.

I am getting such bad sickness and the only way to stop it seems to be eating mainly bland carbs like potatoes etc..

I feel so ill but also so so hungry at the same time.

Is this normal?! I don't know how to be healthier when the thought of something like a salad knocks me sick but could eat jacket potatoes 24/7!

Also if I don't eat, I throw up so I'm just going with it. But bit worried!!

Normal. It will pass.

Strugglingtodomybest · 19/07/2023 12:29

I ate everything in sight when I was pregnant with DS1, I would have done with DS2 too except I didn't have time!

BrandyandGinger · 19/07/2023 12:34

100% normal. The child I was hungriest with during pregnancy is in their late teens now and permanently hungry still. Eat whatever settles your stomach. You'll probably go back to normal in the second semester.
I remember reading that a craving for bland food is a protective thing that evolved to keep babies safe. Meat and stuff like that were more likely to give you food poisoning before refrigeration.

StormShadow · 19/07/2023 12:35

I was like that in one of mine.

tweener · 19/07/2023 12:36

Going through the exact same thing right now, also 6 weeks! I'm so so hungry all the time, and the nausea is awful when I'm not eating/full up.
Rather than carbs I'm hungry for "proper food." Lasagne, casserole and chips, spag bol, anything really that I can mix all together in a bowl and just comfort eat.

BHRK · 19/07/2023 12:36

Totally normal. The only way I stopped feeling nauseous was through eating constantly. And I could only face carbs and salty things, I had to force down fruit and veg.
don’t worry about your weight - sometimes pregnancy is just about coping!

NewCracker · 19/07/2023 12:37

Normal. I wouldn't worry too much about the "healthy" diet while pregnant. I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum and couldn't keep any food and very little water down for the first 20 weeks and the food I did keep down was crumpets, I ate around 9 a day and even then they didn't always stay down. Eat what you can, any food is better than none.

MoonsHaunted · 19/07/2023 12:38

I used to have the appetite of a sparrow but at that stage I was going to McDonald’s 2+ times a day, it was ridiculous but kind of fun 😃

RonObvious · 19/07/2023 12:38

Normal. I think I put on more weight in my first trimester than my third! And my overall weight gain was within normal bounds, so I guess it all balances out in the end.

Hubger · 19/07/2023 12:40

Thanks I've just had chips for dinner after having chips for tea last night and feeling rather greedy but it's no joke when I say I'd throw up otherwise!! Gahhh

Oh god me too. I feel enormous and I'm only 11 weeks. Everything is tighter.

My tips - eat little but often. Big meals are just as nausea-inducing as not eating.

Microwave pouches of rice. I mix in a couple of eggs and add soy sauce.

I find if I have some carbs I can then stomach protein and veg afterwards.

If you or your partner can batch cook some healthier foods eg veggie casseroles then it's easier to defrost/heat up than cook from scratch.

Soups are good.

Cut yourself some slack.

I'm 10 weeks and exactly the same. I was the same in my last pregnancy too. I was hoping to continue on Slimming World during this pregnancy as I didn't want to gain much but I can't face most food and what I do manage isn't exactly SW friendly. I feel like I've gained weight even though I don't want to eat, it's shit.

Jacket potatoes are fine, I'm eating lots of white bread and ritz crackers, the only healthy thing I'm enjoying is fruit. If I fancy rubbish then i eat it though can't face anything sweet. In my experience is eases off around 14 weeks and then you can start making better choices.

The best thing I've found for the nausea is ice lollies, my sister gave me that tip but I didn't really fancy them but got them anyway but they've been a godsend for me! I eat around 4 or 5 a day!

thecatsthecats · 19/07/2023 12:47

I lived off buttered potatoes and ginger biscuits for six weeks, and now at 25w, it's like having a gastric band. There's just no room for food.

Same with me in my last pregnancy too.

Curtains70 · 19/07/2023 12:48

Totally normal, I lived on crumpets for months.

AlltheFs · 19/07/2023 13:04

I had a drawer full of carb snacks in my bedside table, would literally wake up at 3am and eat 10 biscuits. It was really odd. It was hunger like nothing else.

All went away though by about 12 weeks. I didn’t actually get any other symptoms.
