To not sure if I believe him

We’re having a bathroom ripped out and a new one put in.
It has been going on for a month now, and all that has been done is the bathroom has been ripped out and some of the pipe work done, he’s only been in 7.5 days across that month.

The reasons he hasn’t been in are:
children off sick
him catching something off kids
taking his wife to a cardiologist appointment
him having a suspected heart attack - ruled out
him waiting for test results to rule out cancer

I desperately want to believe him as I try to see the best in everyone, but I’m mentally destroyed from this. I know that seems ott but I’m on anti depressants anyway and I’ve had to request an increase of my medication because I can feel my panic attacks coming back.
We’re having to bath our children in an inflatable bath tub in a small en-suite, and have water damage on the bottom of the door to the en-suite.

We have paid him the majority of the money and now we’re really worried if it will even get finished or if he will even come back.

We keep messaging asking for him to come in the next day which is promised to us but then the next day comes and he’s too ill to come in.

I’ve been in tears so much over this.
If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it so much, I just don’t know what to do.

this is awful. if he has a limited company you can consider make a complaint to the ombudsmen?

I have had to learn the hard way not to pay tradesmen more than a small deposit until all work is done. I would recommend asking your DP to speak to him. sadly often women are dismissed in these situations

Those excuses will all be lies as well. The stuff they come out with. I knew one who regularly trotted out that his mother had just died 🙄

The golden rule is that you don't pay upfront to stop this from happening

I'd speak to Citizen's Advice

Thank you for your replies, you have mad me feel so much better about the doubts I have.

I think we need to discuss with him that there is no more money until the job is done.
I am terrified he’s going to say the invoices paid were day rates. If so the end cost will be 3 times as much as the estimate 😔
