New house has Japanese knotweed

Bought the house in November. Gardener showed me a growth and told me it’s Japanese knotweed. He’s come before and not seen it so must be new growth. Any experience or advice very much appreciated. I’ve been watching some horror stories on YouTube about the savage it can do,

I’m not sure. I’m going to buy roundup tomorrow and spray it. Doesn’t it look like the roots are on the other side of the fence?

Yes, it's come through from next door. I would cut off ALL that growth to ground level right now. The stems are hollow; so dribble weedkiller down inside the stumps. It will put up tender new shoots in a week or so; repeat. Keep on top of it.

Dispose of the cuttings safely.

Out of curiosity , those who have disposed of safely, where do you dispose of the cuttings?

Don't do this. You need to treat the leaves so the poison is drawn down to the roots to kill them, any scrap will regrow hence no digging. You also aren't allowed to just "dispose" cuttings. That stuff I posted kills it down to the roots, it's JK approved treatment. The leaves and stem then curl up and shrivel as the roots die off. I use a gas weed wand to burn off any tiny bits left after.

I has one shoot come up repeatedly next to my tree. We dug down a s dug up a thick chunk of it, since then it's tried to put up new shoots but I just snip them off below ground and cover hole with soil and bark chippings. It hasn't had a new shoot for a month now. I think it's given up!

no idea where it's come from though. Only that one shoot in my garden and I can't see any in my neighbours garden

So you had one shoot, and now you have multiple shoots. Well done, digging it up has made it spread!

JK doesn't "give up", it's probably happily spreading underground.

Just to add (oh for an edit button!) Yes the stems are hollow but they're also in sections, with each section being separate iyswim? So putting weedkiller down the stem would result in it just sitting on the cellular wall at the bottom of a section, rather than going to the roots

Buy a couple of goats. They will sort it.
Problem solved

We dug it out and burnt it. It was a bit of a bugger but don’t panic.

Our neighbour grows it 🤦🏼‍♀️on purpose.
