90's Swiss/German chocolate milk powder

Very very niche and probably a needle in a haystack
I used to go to Switzerland (German speaking part) every year as a child and a relative made the most amazing chocolate milk using a powder. I have never managed to find anything that tastes as good. Does anyone know which brand it may have been? What's the most popular brand?

Could it have been Milka? They're Swiss.

RobertaFirmino · 15/07/2023 01:14

Suchard? At least, I think that's what it was called.

NatashaWins · 15/07/2023 01:15

Swiss au pair friend used to get care packages from her Mum containing this brand: https://www.caotina.com/en/products/caotina-classic-500g

Could it be that?

@Username620 😉

Caotina as above or the other one I've seen in Switzerland is Ovomaltine, but I'd be surprised if it was that one!

  1. it's very unlikely to be the same formula now as it was then and 2) your tastes have probably evolved over the years and even if was the same it probably wouldn't be to your taste now. If you want good hot chocolate: find the right combination of at least 72% dark chocolate & any milk chocolate (in total about 2.5 squares equivalent to a Lindt bar), add a little bit of water, microwave for 30 seconds, stir, stir in milk, microwave for about 1.5 minutes. Even better made in a milk frother.

Ovomaltine?

Anycrispsleft · 15/07/2023 05:58

Was it Banago? My Swiss DH often reminisces about that stuff. It had a gorilla in the front of the packet.

Personally I prefer Cailler hot chocolate powder, in fact Cailler everything.

LMNT · 15/07/2023 06:03

Suchard express?

Agree with poster above… Cailler is the best chocolate in the world!

JustRingJoeDuffy · 15/07/2023 06:15

These are what I have in my hot chocolate selection ... any look familiar?
I moved here to Switzerland in 2000 and both Caotina and Suchard express have always been available.
Not so sure about Lindt patisserie think it might be more recent.

Suchard express yes!

Suchard is sold where I am (not Switzerland), and the product has definitely changed since the 90s, not just regarding ingredients (different type of sugars) and flavours but also the resulting product flavour. That does not mean it tastes less good, just a bit different. But then also the other brands that make chocolate powder seem to have changed, except probably Caotina - that one seems closest to earlier versions or maybe the same; I did not buy it often.

You can order it here: germandeli.co.uk

Smoothiecarton · 15/07/2023 17:51

Droste? But i think it’s from the Netherlands but was widely sold in neighbouring places.

Smoothiecarton · 15/07/2023 17:51

Oh too late 😄
