To think Specsavers contact lenses ad is unfairly targeting teenagers?

This one-

Basically they’re saying it’s hard to kiss with glasses on so you should get contact lenses. Obviously any adult would know this isn’t the case at all (am a glasses wearer married to another glasses wearer and never been an issue) so it feels like it’s targeted towards teenagers who haven’t done much kissing yet, and making them feel insecure about wearing glasses. Just seems a bit unfair- they’ve got enough to worry about without thinking they need the expense and faff of contact lenses to be able to kiss!

I don't think it's unfairly targeting teens but we got one in the post yesterday and found it a bit of an odd marketing campaign.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 14/07/2023 13:49

I think it's just trying to be funny.

They've obviously sat and talked about things that wearing glasses might affect that aren't life threatening or dangerous

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 14/07/2023 13:51

DH and I wear glasses for long distances. We do find kissing wearing glasses to be more effort than kidding without

ManateeFair · 14/07/2023 14:00

I don't think kissing is an activity limited to teenagers, so I don't think teenagers are the target. I think it's just a humorous advert. It's really not that deep.

FWIW, DP and I both wear specs and we've definitely had a few awkward specs clashes in our time! But yeah, of course it's not impossible to kiss with glasses on.

No but it’s teenagers who will be worrying about the mechanics of it iyswim- I’m fairly confident in my ability to kiss DH at this point!

Interesting that other people have had clashes though, literally never been an issue for me! Maybe we have massive noses keeping our glasses apart 😂

Ad a glasses wearer I absolutely hate it! Makes me feel a bit shit for wearing them!

CC4712 · 14/07/2023 14:14

Of courses glasses can clash together and get in the way OP!

If you feel so strongly about the advert- then make an official complaint to them! 🙄

Bagpuss2022 · 14/07/2023 14:23

Interesting just seen this for the first time my DD has just started wearing contacts a few weeks ago I’m positive that kissing with glasses on wasn’t on her radar when deciding to have them

ActDottie · 14/07/2023 14:51

Glasses do get in the way when you kiss though!!

Contact lenses are more practical for many reasons and they’re just highlighting one of those reasons.

toffeeappleglow · 14/07/2023 15:03

Someone I once knew spoke about how romantic it was when her husband would remove her glasses before going in for a kiss, so maybe contact lens-wearers are missing something... 😂

The idea of putting things in my eyes was enough to scare me away from contact lenses for life. I grew up feeling disgusted by the stupid trope that glasses = ugly. (Plain girl with glasses becomes stunningly beautiful once she removes glasses and slightly restyles hair, etc.) I do think it's annoying when people try say or imply that glasses are somehow 'bad' or inferior to contact lenses, but it's nothing new. All part of trying to make a sale.

Clementineorsatsuma · 14/07/2023 15:27

I think it's vile and creepy as tbh. As do any teens I know!

Ponderingwindow · 14/07/2023 15:34

Doesn’t seem teen targeted to me.

also, why shouldn’t teens enjoy the benefits of wearing contacts. My dd has been wearing contacts since she was 10. Admittedly that is on the early side, but she despised glasses because of sensory issues and was highly motivated to get into contacts.

Sandinmyknickers · 14/07/2023 16:10

Doesn't seem teen targeted to me but I would appreciate maybe a different scenario such as playing group sports- obviously I know some people play sports with glasses on, but since I goy contacts my physical activity levels went up so much more and I played more sports. I think that is a much better contacts ad and more of a barrier to teens doing sports than wearing pads are to horse riding or whatever other stupid things tampax ads tell us....

CoachBeardsJane · 14/07/2023 18:14

I got stuck to my husbands glasses literally as we got married

you may kiss the bride kiss... hair got stuck in his glasses. Never had that happen in the 3 years previously or the 7 years since!!!!

LlynTegid · 14/07/2023 18:32

OP not sure what grounds you can use, but you can complain to the Advertising Standards Authority.

TheSilentSister · 14/07/2023 18:34

I recently went to SpecSavers with my DS and while waiting they had a screen up advertising contact lenses for teens. This advertising far outweighed any other content. I thought it very odd. There wasn't any mention of kissing, lol, but it did state that some 'state of the art' lenses actually help improve/stop deterioration in young eyes.
My DS just said 'Eww, I'm not poking anything in my eyes'.
I will add that the care they gave my DS (compared to old me) was superb. They had a specialist 'child' optometrist who had to sign off on all kids prescriptions and he was so patient and funny.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 14/07/2023 18:34

Not seen the advert but I dislike anything which highlights the negatives of wearing glasses.
