Emma killing my back - any soft mattress recommendations?

JoyApple · 14/07/2023 09:02

Hi,

So we bought the Emma mattress based on recommendations but it's killing my back. I'm side sleeper ATM (pregnant) and it's absolutely awful. We are both also light weight so are not "breaking" into it.

I need a recommendation for a lovely soft (not medium) mattress please. There seem to be so few out there? Budget is around £500 for a king size.

Thanks!

You could try a mattress topper, a lot cheaper than a new mattress

JaceLancs · 14/07/2023 09:18

Try ikea and do the online assessment as it asks about sleeping position - weight etc then recommends options

Stickykidney · 14/07/2023 09:19

Feel your pain! Had this with an emma too and was torture. Put anyone off that you can what a waste.
Second IKEA and I love bedtime jumping into my perfect bed (I also wnlent and 'tried on' mattreses in store

MuttsNutts · 14/07/2023 09:24

I need a soft mattress as well (side sleeper too). I bought a Simba and it went back as too hard but the Emma came and I love it BUT only after I contacted them and they sent me a soft top layer to put in it. Didn’t cost anything and it sorted me right out so it might be worth a try if you don’t have that already.

I think they also do a firm top layer for those who find the basic mattress too soft.

I think ikea mattress’s are pretty good. If you have £500 to spend you can get a fairly decent one.

JoyApple · 14/07/2023 09:54

@MuttsNutts I have the soft topper on too, and it's still too firm!

@Stickykidney which one did you get from IKEA?

@gogomoto I can return the emma so that's the plan hopefully!

The Perfect mattress from Loaf in regular (it is the softest one in the range, they also do firm and extra firm). I had a frozen shoulder and most mattresses were too hard to sleep on but this one has been great. Now 9 years old and feels like new.

Seenandheard · 14/07/2023 10:07

How long have you had it for?
I have one and thought it was a silly gimmick when they advised that it can take 6 weeks or so to get used to the new Emma mattress. I thought that it was a ploy to get people to persist and then never bother to return.
But I was wrong! It did suddenly get super comfy a couple of weeks in(and not because I wore it in). I'm a side sleeper with hypermobile joints and my husband is a back sleeper. We have both grown to love it! So maybe try a bit longer (if you haven't given it a

decent chance?)

JoyApple · 14/07/2023 10:36

@Seenandheard it's been a week with the soft mattress topper but I'm pregnant and honestly can't afford to wait 6 weeks for it to soften.

I think it also depends on people's weight. My sister loves hers but she's much more heavier than me.

Get a panda mattress topper. I had one and it was fab.

Seenandheard · 14/07/2023 13:00

Ok...ps I'm not heavy!! 😄

RobertaFirmino · 14/07/2023 14:44

Want to swap for a Simba? I've got one and it's far too soft. My back is murder too!

Stickykidney · 14/07/2023 15:04

This one here .. but worth trying them on cos my mum went to get the same one and hated it and got a softer one. They do a wee quiz online to help you find one that suits you

A friend of mine swears by otty
I recommended ikea for choosing options including soft but I’m a firm mattress person by preference and I’ve just bought a pocket sprung wool mix mattress from John Lewis because I’m old school lol
although it’s a few years ago I was a retail manager for a leading bed retailer for quite a while and loved a handmade millbrook bed

dearJayne · 14/07/2023 23:19

Buy a latex mattress. It's the best mattress I've ever bought.

Firstshoes · 14/07/2023 23:33

I tried three memory foam mattresses. They all felt like sleeping on concrete. All went back. I bought a Fogarty Pillow Top mattress from Dunelm. Around £450 for a King. Perfect for my back. I am also a side sleeper and fairly light!

snoozingbaby1476 · 14/07/2023 23:58

We have an Emma. I hated it at first it took quite a few months but I love it now.

PickAChew · 15/07/2023 00:05

I have a soft vispring mattress. Cost anarmanaleg. Lovely for 2 years then dire, ever since.

I'm disillusioned with mattresses
