Car being used for personal use whilst in the garage

I had my car in a local garage last month. They said they couldn't find anything wrong and did a system reset. They eventually got it back to me at the start of this month.

I have just caught the fuckers out. They have done at least 480 miles in my car as they got a parking ticket 240 miles away at a supermarket car park. AIBU to be livid. It's a lease car so I have a milage limit. They've obviously been on a jolly. What compensation if any can I ask for? Cheeky fuckers.

I'd be reporting them to the Police OP.

Seeline · 10/07/2023 16:11

There is a possibility that your reg plates have been cloned.

Surely you would have noticed an extra 480 miles on your clock?

Aaron95 · 10/07/2023 16:12

Has the mileage increased by 500 miles while it was in the garage?

It seems more likely someone has cloned your plates than a garage owner drove it 500 miles and went to Tesco.

LisaD1 · 10/07/2023 16:13

I’m another who would assume your plates have been cloned. I’d report to police.

Rollonannualeave · 10/07/2023 16:13

It could be that the plates are cloned as the car looked really dark on the image
Where do I go from here?

I received a ticket once for going though a red light in Hull. Never been to Hull in my life.
I could prove where I'd been that day so they let me off.

Call 101 and report it to the police.

Bromptotoo · 10/07/2023 16:16

As others say, are the 500 or so miles evident from your odometer and/or fuel state?

I'd start by telling the supermarket you were not driving but, in order to be as helpful as possible could you see the CCTV (or patroller's) pictures of the car. Hopefully more than just a grab of your VRN plates but even then things like UK/GB flags, plate makers logo or damage would help ID a clone.

Bromptotoo · 10/07/2023 16:18

Try asking on a car related forum like Pepi poo or Honest John.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 10/07/2023 16:24

Has your milage increased by 500?
DP had his plates cloned, and “his” car was clocked doing about 140mph... the police were actually very helpful and it was clear that the souped up BMW they fake plates were attached to was not DPs clapped out Citroen. Apparently it’s incredibly common.
If the milage has increased I’d talk to the garage first, the garage owner genuinely might not know that one of the staff “borrowed” it, if it hasn’t, police and report your plates as cloned.

determinedtomakethiswork · 10/07/2023 16:25

You would think that if you cloned numberplates that you'd have the sense to choose the same type of car, wouldn't you?

Netaporter · 10/07/2023 16:46

Ex car dealer here. Sadly it is possible that someone took your car for the weekend. When you dropped off your car, did they check you in? There should be a mileage entered into the system. Is that 500miles less than now? Was it a main dealer? If yes, complain to the manufacturer of the franchise. Otherwise, Does your car have a telematics device fitted which you can access via a map? Does your sat nav show any unusual destinations in the ‘recent’ journeys? Is the garage signed up to any trade bodies?

Rollonannualeave · 10/07/2023 16:53

Yes just looked at a better picture on the parking eye website and it's a cloned vehicle! Or at least a cloned number plate. A black Merc, mine is white and not a Merc at all!!

It's a lease car so do I let tj.deal with it or do I notify the police?

EvilElsa · 10/07/2023 16:57

Speak to the police as it's a crime. You can then inform the lease company with a crime reference number.

FFS maybe you should get your facts straight next time before jumping to conclusions.

@drpet49 had a bad day in the office? I've only just worked it out. But there we are. I'm sure you know it all.

I used to work at Audi and I remember a workshop controller taking a customer's car home

If you don't know the mileage that your car was on when it went in to the garage you could ask the person that booked it in. A lot of garages make a note of the mileage on arrival, assuming they aren't in on it

LlynTegid · 10/07/2023 17:16

Go to the police.

I suppose it's think about what the possibilities could have been before starting a thread.

Hope you get the issue sorted.

cakeorwine · 10/07/2023 17:23

Of course, people are going to reply to the OP without reading the updates.
Should be interesting

It must have specified the make, model and colour on the parking ticket. Just inform the police and the company that issued the ticket - with a picture of your car.
