Why did I think Shirley Valentine ended this way?

A friend and I met up to watch this movie, as we're off to Greece soon. It was forward for its time and very relatable! Neither of us had seen it for years.
I was absolutely, 100% convinced that Tom Conti's character wasn't actually Greek. In my head, when she returned to his pub at the end, she saw him flirting with girls in a strong English accent. But that wasn't the case at all. I still thought he was faking even when he attended his (obviously Greek) family member's wedding
Have I got it muddled with another film? You could have knocked me for six when it didn't pan out how I thought.
Loved the film though.

His character was meant to be Greek but the actor playing him was not.

I think her husband in the film looked like Costas . They both had moustaches. May be that's why You were confused.
