Have you made any life altering decisions lately?

I've just withdrawn from a full-time teaching job I had accepted. It was a maternity cover, and I mulled over it for several days. I may regret it, but too late.
Have you made any big decisions lately?

Yep, quit my job after only 3mths (still in probation). I’d stayed in my previous job for 15yrs so this was very unlike me! Life is too short to be unhappy in your job if you can change it, that’s what I decided anyway!

Ofashynessthatiscriminallyvulgar · 05/07/2023 19:49

Sorry to hear that, what was it that made you want to leave it? Yes absolutely, definitely not worth staying somewhere you're unhappy at

Mainly a crap manager who, if I stayed, I would have had to manage. I’ve done that before and refuse to spoon feed someone who is paid far more than me and does far less. I think I am become far less tolerant (or growing more of a backbone!) as I get older!

Worriedaandconfused · 05/07/2023 19:56

Too intrusive to ask why you withdrew from the job offer, OP?

No life altering decisions as of late for me. The last big decision was to try for baby number 2 and now I'm sat here typing this holding my 6 week old 💙

LuckOfTheDrawer · 05/07/2023 19:58

I'm also changing jobs 🙂.

Blueuggboots · 05/07/2023 19:58

I've handed in my notice and got a job in a much much lower paid role that I know will bring me joy.

troppibambini6 · 05/07/2023 20:32

Yep we are putting our forever home on the market. We are downsizing because we just can't afford to do this long term.
I thought the kids would be gutted but actually they are excited.
I'm trying to be really positive and remember we are in a much better position than a lot of people. I'm also trying to be positive around dh as he has a lot of stress at work at the moment but inside I'm sad.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/07/2023 20:46

I’ve accepted a new permanent nights job. Plus we are seriously house hunting, not just keeping an eye on the market.

GratitudeGoddess · 05/07/2023 20:46

I've just handed my notice. I work in mental health and have reached burnout. I've no idea if I'm going to continue in the same profession. I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do next. Life is too short.

sittingonacornflake · 05/07/2023 20:48

Applied to move DS5 to another school.

SuperSuperDry · 05/07/2023 20:49

Restarted driving. I was terrified of driving. Turns out it was by far cheaper for me personally that what I was doing before and I have the gift of time. I expected this to be more expensive. 😂

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/07/2023 20:50

I start a new job next week. I'm feeling a little guilty though as I'm in the running for a more fulfilling job elsewhere so may not stay long.

DarkWingDuck · 05/07/2023 20:53

Me and my partner have both left the NHS after working in it for 15 - 20 years. It was a big decision but it’s it’s just not possible to work there anymore. On the back of this we will be selling our beautiful forever home. I’m devastated about that but know that no house is worth the damage our jobs were doing to us.

I have a lot of teachers friends that have been making the decision to leave the profession recently.

hoophoophooray · 05/07/2023 20:53

Put my running shoes on for the first time in a long time after I accidentally entered a half marathon next year. Covid fucked my MH, I'm hoping this will be life changing and get me back to being me.

Theonlyreason · 05/07/2023 20:54

Oh my, very similar. I’ve just withdrawn my teaching job that I had secured in September. I have a brand new role outside of education but I haven’t started yet. Can’t wait 😁.

NoraLuka · 05/07/2023 21:10

A friend wants me to buy a business with him. He has lots of experience, I don’t really but on the basis of a discussion we had, he thinks it would be a great idea. He is a sensible guy and I’m already self employed but this is a whole new level of self employed. DP and friend’s wife are both saying go for it but it really feels like a sliding doors moment where life could go one of two ways.

Moredramathanrazzamatazz · 05/07/2023 21:17

Yes I have decided not to do the retraining course I was going to do in September and retrain in a completely different career.

Ofashynessthatiscriminallyvulgar · 05/07/2023 21:40

I'm really happy to hear everyone's stories, I hope it all works out.
I just realised I was stupid to have accepted the position, and knew I'd be doing ridiculous hours and that it wouldn't be worth it. I hope it's the right decision.

Excited for everybody :)

I changed jobs and moved house in a 5 week period. (Both took longer than that to set up, but it was still a big deal actually changing and moving).

I was NHS and still am but a very different outside the hospitals. So far it's awesome. So is the house. Dp is going to move in soon too.

RuthW · 05/07/2023 21:46

I decided to enter into a civil partnership

DH left teaching after 25 years due to burn out. He is now in a very different non teaching role at our local FE college, and I have never seen him happier. He took a pay cut, but my god that £15k was worth every penny!

Snowpaw · 05/07/2023 21:51

Decided it was time to address my weight which had gotten a bit out of control and I was struggling with PCOS symptoms. So I cut my job hours from full-time to part-time and I now see a trainer twice a week and am down a jeans size so far. I feel amazing. I was heading for health problems if I didn't make a big change. For now, I am prioritising me.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 05/07/2023 21:52

I've given notice at my workplace after 13 years, to take a job that requires being away 2-3 nights a week, every week.

Bananazebra · 05/07/2023 21:53

Happy you made your decision OP 😁 I'm sure it's the right one
