to think that £16.95 for Canesten combi is extortionate!

£16.95!!

It’s been a while since I had thrush but for some reason it’s decided to annoy me these past few days, possibly my jeggings are too tight (I need to lose a few Ibs)!

I decided to buy a box while I was the supermarket, granted this was Waitrose but I could t be bothered to treck to the next nearest town to buy from the pharmacy! Yes, my fault but this is within walking distance of my home so convenient.

Why is it so expensive!! Anyone?

You can buy own brand versions in boots , Sainsbury's and I think Tesco for about 60% of the price

Flyonthewall01 · 01/07/2023 14:11

Don’t buy canestan buy own brand it’s so much cheaper. No different than complaining about paying £4 for neurofen instead of 50p Tesco ibuprofen. You’re paying for the brand

@Lilly11a that’s good to know!

I’ve only ever bought Canesten for Thrush and it’s been a while since I suffered with it.

Hopefully the tiny tube will last me for a few years!

@Flyonthewall01 Unfortunately Waitrose didn’t sell an own brand product, I’ll know better next time.

It’s utterly ridiculous. And the cream tubes have reduced to 20g which is next to nothing.

I suffered my first dose of thrush recently and used all of the above to no avail. I had to see my GP about something else and she gave me a prescription for seven doses and two tubes of cream. I felt as if I’d won the lottery 🤣 Only used three so am well stocked up if the evil pest returns.

kafkascastle · 01/07/2023 14:57

It is extortionate. However if, you get free prescriptions, some pharmacy have a scheme where you can get items from the pharmacist for free. I don’t know the name of the scheme as it has changed its name and not all areas do it. It covers treatments for a lot of minor illnesses (minor illness scheme?) and covers thrush.

Oblomov23 · 01/07/2023 14:58

Absolute rip off. Hardly anywhere sells just the cream.

FurryPelmet · 01/07/2023 15:13

YANBU. I get these and keep spares at home as they have a shelf life of a few years. If I don’t use a pack before it expires it’s still cheaper to bin it than buy the stuff you’re buying!

£3.49 for three tablets. It’s the active ingredient in Canestan tablets. You only take one and they work within hours. No reason to be paying £16 - it’s ridiculous.

I only ever just want the pessary and that is usually a pig to get on its own, I have so many tubes of the cream which is nearly always wasted

ArcticSkewer · 01/07/2023 15:20

I just use the tablets. Buy in bulk and keep at home. You can usually give them away to friends if you don't need them all. Could buy about 7 for that price!

BooksAndHooks · 01/07/2023 15:28

I always ordered non brand tablets and cream online for a fraction of the cost.

Rubyupbeat · 01/07/2023 15:32

I used to buy the canestan for under the boobs type thrush, but went on to buy Lloyd's own, 30% of the price. Now Lloyd's have closed I will have to find somewhere else.

AutumnCrow · 01/07/2023 15:38

I asked at the Asda pharmacy and the lovely Simon, the pharmacy assistant, steered me toward the much cheaper own brand products, for about £6 all in.

Simon was doing it all in discreet and melodious hushed tones when DP sauntered up with our bag of shopping and said loudly, 'so have you got your thrush cream yet?'

1970X · 01/07/2023 16:17

Will definitely do a bit more research next time but it really shouldn’t be this way should it. Bloody robbing barstewards!

oh FFS and i should swap. 😂 She only needs the pessary. I only need the cream. I will buy the cheaper cream in future if I can get hold of it. But normally, when I really do need it, I am limited as to places I can access, to get it, I only have time to go to say 1 supermarket, so I just buy what I can get, in desperation!!
