To despise packing to go away, especially when hungover?

I literally would rather stay at home to avoid it! Obviously that's not reasonable, I'll be fine once I've cobbled together my things Grin I may have a slight hangover.

I need to leave for the airport in 45 minutes and need to finish packing and have a quick shower. I hate packing so much.

I see really polished folk at the airport all the time who look so chic in clothes that look comfortable for flying but also look good, with nice luggage, and I envy them. No way could I ever do this.

Who else hates packing?

You can do it, I believe in you. Have your shower and repeat the mantra “I am not going to Outer Mongolia, if I forget to pack my toothbrush or my knickers I can just buy them when I get there.”

Unless you’re going to Outer Mongolia, in which case, ignore me.

Ahead of my last major holiday, my cases went from Photo 1 to Photo 2 in a mad dash and the space of about an hour so I empathise. I’ll never be chic and polished arriving at the airport with my bags neatly packed days in advance - and that’s okay.

Wintry57 · 29/06/2023 14:13

Credit card, passport, tickets - you can replace anything else. I hate the going away frantic rush and the coming back endless washing and invariably forget something!

Mumtumtastic · 29/06/2023 14:50

Well done for getting through it OP, you must be on your way by now! Yeah packing is a bane but worth it once you get there!

Enjoy your trip away and Bon voyage 😊

Packing

One of the reasons I haven’t divorced DH.😂

That said, I have watched him often enough to have a fair stab at it, so he better not get too complacent.😉

Although I would miss him.

BlueKaftan · 29/06/2023 15:00

I just packed an hour before we left. I always pack in my mind first.

schnubbins · 29/06/2023 15:02

I am sitting here reading Mumsnet even though I should be upstairs packing....

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 29/06/2023 15:03

I dislike packing and can’t go away leaving a messy house so always like to be packed 24hrs in advance with a few hours to clean the day before the travel. I know I’m weird.

Incognitoergosumlol · 29/06/2023 15:13

This is literally me at the moment. I just can't be fucked. Also have to pack for ddog and make sure all favourite chews/treats/food/suncream/blankets are accounted for. Then a 4 hour drive (with a sat nav that doesn't recognise the destination) because partner can't drive. Dreading it.

BananaPalm · 29/06/2023 15:21

Omg! I'm in the same boat! Hate packing and now have to pack everything that my toddler will need for a month too! Last year we didn't go anywhere for hols just because of the hassle of booking, organising and packing with a baby. 🙈

swedex · 29/06/2023 15:27

Yep hate it! I've managed to pack our cases for an very early start tomorrow but house is a tip and I'm getting terrible anxiety with the anticipation of tomorrow urgh

fuckinghatepacking · 29/06/2023 15:27

Well, I was 80% packed AND OUR FLIGHT IS CANCELLED.

All that for nothing, I'm quite fucked off now. Cancelled our restaurant reservation for our anniversary meal. Managed to book a local place I have wanted to go to for a while, but still.

BA by any chance ?

fuckinghatepacking · 29/06/2023 15:37

No, United Airlines. We're in NYC at the moment, and meant to be having a weekend break out of town. Oh well!

I love being on holiday but I hate going! Few days beforehand and I will be wishing more than anything I'd never booked it. Usually end up flinging things in like a blue-arsed fly at the last minute and stress levels through the roof! Same every single time.

I can only relax once in the airport, and through security.

venusandmars · 29/06/2023 16:10

Decades ago I went to visit my friend in student halls. Three weeks before our planned holiday she already had a case half packed. tbf she probably had to do a whole lot of planning about what needed to go in the laundry over the next couple of weeks and what her parents had to collect but I was a bit wtf?

I'm still a get-up-at-4am-and-throw-some-knickers-in-a-bag kind of person. But I do think I have an organised mind, so I know the items I'll chuck in at the last minute. Also years of experience has taught me that 80% of what I take will not get worn (or I'll wear it and feel unhappy or uncomfortable). Small selection of a few favourites.

We've alays had rules: every adult packs their own stuff and is responsible for their own passport. Every child over the age of 4 has to make an attempt at packing their own stuff. dd aged 5 once packed pjs, toothbrush, a tiara, and two handbags Grin. Of course I sorted it, but start early.

But I HATE unpacking...

Soonenough · 29/06/2023 17:01

Never mind all that ! WTF is @ComtesseDeSpair doing packing a wolfy mask and furry cape in Pic 1 ??!! Where were you going ? What were going to do ? Please come back and tell us.
OP Lay everything you want to bring with you. And then put half back. Works for me.

Dogslife25 · 29/06/2023 20:12

I stress for weeks before hand then the day before end up just throwing stuff in 'just in case' and forgetting what I actually need, wish I was a bit more organised 🤪

the80sweregreat · 29/06/2023 21:02

I hate packing and unpacking
It's just horrible !

cardibach · 29/06/2023 21:07

Write a list. I keep an essentials list on my phone (medications, washing stuff, underwear, pjs) the. Copy and paste it to a new list about a week before travelling. Add what I want for the holiday as gh8 gs occur to me. The day before (or the morning of if there’s time) gather the list stuff and pack it. Sorted.
I still hate it, but it’s not manic and stressful.

LadyInBread · 29/06/2023 21:08

Packing is made infinitely easier by

A) having a permanent packing list, saved to your phone of all the stuff you have to take, regardless of where you're going. Eg pants

B) keeping a travel toiletries bag permanently stocked. Every time you run out of something you take a replacement out the toiletries bag and buy a new one that goes in the bag. That way you have a stock turnover mechanism.

Wintry57 · 30/06/2023 11:02

Yeah that’s good advice - whereas I dump every sample into a bag and this can result in a less than ideal holiday beauty routine!

Ladyoftheknight · 30/06/2023 20:06

I always do this with work trips. Have a boozy meal with DH night before, then wake up and think shit where's that one dress that doesn't wrinkle and makes my bum look good?? Cue mad panic rush, break out in a sweat and feel like I'll barf into my cosmetics bag. Always ends up fine though, stop at starbucks en route and get more for the airport. Everything is replaceable and can be bought in most cities!
