To not brush my hair very often

I lost my hairbrush about 2 weeks ago and I keep meaning to buy another one but realised I don’t really use it so keep forgetting.

I do have a professional type job but I hate brushing or straightening my hair. I have thick shoulder length dark hair. It does not get matted. It’s kind of naturally wavy. I either wear my hair up in a high messy ponytail, messy bun or half up half down and just let the rest it air dry/frizz around in a frizzy wavy way. I just wash it then run my hands through it when it’s wet then get dressed and go out.

I definitely get a LOT of people notice when I do brush my hair properly as I get comments and from all my colleagues - even my own DP will looked shocked and ask me if I just had my hair done. I just reply ‘no.. sorry I just I brushed it’. I cannot stand having my hair touch me if I am hot and I don’t like it being tied up too tight as it hurts my head.

I fear I am now that woman with mad hair who never brushes her hair. Am I alone in this? Is hair brushing really important? 🤣 should I be at least brushing my hair every day for work to not look like a birds nest person at work?

That's normal for curly or very wavy hair!

I only brush mine once a week when I wash it. No brush or comb goes near it when it's dry.

If you are happy with the way it looks then crack on but I suspect that if everyone comments when you do brush it then it may look better brushed!

bumbledeedum · 24/06/2023 21:08

Generally recommended not to brush wavy/curly hair unless soaking wet so lots of people I know of don't 'brush' theirs. Sounds completely normal to me if you're just detangling it in the shower.

continentallentil · 24/06/2023 21:09

Well if everyone thinks it looks great when you brush it, that means you need to brush it, yes.

Totally mad hair is rarely a good look on an adult sadly, although can be sweet on little kids.

Proper curly hair is different, you can’t usually brush it, but you’d still shape it in other ways.

I dont often brush mine, perhaps every few days, perhaps less. Not even got the excuse of it being curly. I wash it more than I brush it to be honest!

bonfirebash · 24/06/2023 21:11

Mine is wavy and I only brush it when it's wet with conditioner in it

Daisythecat15 · 24/06/2023 21:11

I mean... I think everyone saying your hair looks good when you brush it means you probably should brush it more, but it's your choice.

Mine would be a matted mess if I didn't brush it daily so I can't relate!

Dreadlocks maybe?

Menora · 24/06/2023 21:14

I feel like it just looks a bit scruffy but just about passable. Like I am very a busy person and just didn’t get time to do it 🤣. But this is every day so now it’s becoming a lifestyle choice 😭. I am 42 how do you learn how to style your hair nearly every day? 🤣

I don't 'style' my hair with 'products' to keep it in place - even when I had to work in 'presenteistic' roles.

It shows now - after decades of not having to look as others want me to - it's an untamed semi-mane.

Whilst I really don't care, I'd make great 'fodder' for a make-over if anyone's offering.

Hbradley · 24/06/2023 21:25

I completely get you as a wavy haired 43 year old. I work in professional job with lots of calls and I don’t brush and Just pull it up. Like you if I do make an effort people are amazed! But if I haven’t washed it there is no point in brushing )

squashyhat · 24/06/2023 21:28

Never brush mine. Comb when wet and to redo parting, otherwise I just run my fingers through it.

gogomoto · 24/06/2023 21:29

Haven't had a brush in years. I own a detangling comb I keep in the shower

Menora · 24/06/2023 21:33

I’m getting a shower comb. That’s what I need!

Curly hair here. I haven’t owned a brush or comb for about 20 years? Washed every day and use fingers to de tangle in the shower.

I cultivated the ‘deliberately messy’ look for my professional job!

The only time it gets a little dicey is when I’m sailing, but pigtails and a bandanna sort that out.

The last time I used a brush I looked like the love child of Janis Joplin and Gilda Radner.
