Boyfriend keeps calling me exes name (they’re similar)

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for seven months. His very first girlfriend has a similar name to mine i.e. she’s Tara, I’m Cara. These aren’t our real names but it’s more so for context so you know how similar they are. There has been times when I’ve introduced myself to people and they’ve called me by his exes name by simply mishearing me (people who don’t know either his ex or my boyfriend).

They were together for a few years 6-8 years ago. Today, he called me Tara twice and I got a bit annoyed and said you just called me your exes name. He apologized and said his mouth was dry and he was a little stoned. However, he did it a third time but quickly correct himself and I decided to then hang up.

He has done it in the past before. It just pisses me off but I also understand how similar they are.

AIBU to be pissed?

I'd be seriously annoyed if a boyfriend couldn't remember my name no matter how similar it is to another name. It's basic courtesy.

Yabu to date a druggy.. What sort of behaviour did you expect?

I agree. He has forgotten my friends names a few times which I also felt was rude but calling me his exes stung a little (lot). He is really forgetful and sets alarms to remember things. I think he’s a little fried from the smoko!

He doesn’t do hard drugs only smokes pot. It’s decriminalised in his home country and apart of their culture. I’ve no issue with weed personally, but understand some people are anti drugs & get that.

Wow haha I knew this would be a response on this thread but I thought we'd get through at least two posts before it showed up 😆

Op I would be annoyed too. Idk what I'd do about it though, sorry. Sucks though.

Dotcheck · 21/06/2023 22:53

What culture has embraced weed?
Genuinely curious!

Weed smoking is really off putting though, regardless of culture

ThinWomansBrain · 21/06/2023 22:54

Maybe try having a relationship with someone that's in full command of their senses rather than stoned.

Grow up

She has grown up! She doesn’t date druggies.

Grow up.

Her bf got her name wrong three times and blamed being stoned. The stoner isnt the grown up here.

PaigeMatthews · 21/06/2023 23:01

Op, what do you want to happen? Where do you see it going? It is a short relationship and he cannot get your name right.

Hummusanddipdip · 21/06/2023 23:01

At 7 months in I would be starting to get irritated, but it wouldn't be a big deal.

I called dh by my exs name, he called me by his exs name and both sets of parents did it too a few times within the first year of our relationship.

Daisythecat15 · 21/06/2023 23:02

I don't think I could stay with someone who still couldn't get my name right after 7 months.

Florenz · 21/06/2023 23:07

He's a dope fiend, what do you expect?

Calling you the wrong name 3 times in one day is simply not acceptable, whether drunk, stoned or high.

Around half the world's countries have legalised marijuana for medical use.

30 countries have decriminalised marijuana.

Around a dozen countries have legalised marijuana for recreational use.

Plus there are places like Jamaica where marijuana was part of the culture long before it was decriminalised.

There's smoking Wes occasionally and then there is smoking to the extent that you are in a constant state of gormlessness that you can't remember peoples names including your nearest and dearest.

What a catch.

EllaRaines · 21/06/2023 23:12

Weed not Wes ^

Circumferences · 21/06/2023 23:12

Yea I dated a stoner for three years.
He got my name right but couldn't get anything else right. Hence he's an EX.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 21/06/2023 23:16

I wouldn't even socialise with someone who smokes weed, let alone date one! If I knew someone smoked it, I wouldn't allow my child around them either.
I don't give a toss what mistakes other countries are making. In this country, it is (for good reason) still a recreational drug and it is a crime to smoke it (regardless of/if it is enforced) - this is a fact that cannot be denied, though I'm sure a few weed smokers will give it their best shot!

Yes, my boyfriend is half Jamaican and half Dutch.

His grandparents and dad are Rastafarians. I don’t know much about it but I know weed has something to do with their religion.

Weed is also decriminalised in the Netherlands (where he grew up for the most part).

It’s always been in his life and never viewed as a bad thing!

@Begsthequestion And? This is the UK! Where it is still illegal. Argue it with links about how amazing it is, all you like but the fact remains!

EllaRaines · 21/06/2023 23:25

Why would you want to be with someone so dopey and gormless, whether it's from smoking weed or from just being dim-witted?

Perhaps you should wear a name badge like we used to do on our first day of school.

Do you want to check the context of my post before you clutch your pearls?

I was replying to a question.

Yeah tbh Mumsnet is unusually disconnected to the real world in many ways.

Though probably most of their kids are smoking it.

Incorrect. Marijuana has been decriminalised for medical use in the UK, which is included in the list I quoted in my post.
