Had a text earlier asking "wrong name" what time is dinner and what are the plans for tomorrow. This was from an unknown number. I replied saying it was an incorrect number. They apologised and said hoped they hadn't bothered me I said it was fine and then I got this response.

Thank you for understanding me. You look good person. nice to see you . I hope we become friends this wrong way.May I know what is your name?

I've not replied.

I just got a call from another unknown number (I thought it was the takeaway driver). When I answered it was a man and he said life is hard, thank you thank you, where are you.

I hung up thinking it was the same number as the text but it isn't. I set my phone to DND and he's rang 4 times.

I mean surely it's some sort of weird thing but I don't get it?

What am I missing?

I assume that maybe they try to strike up a friendship and then maybe it’s some sort of romance type scam thing? Odd though. Just block and ignore

swanling · 16/06/2023 19:56

I don't really understand why you haven't blocked both numbers already?

Mongoosesorry · 16/06/2023 19:56

He may be a romance scammer. You reply and he hoovers you over several weeks - declaring his undying love and asking you to pay for his grandmothers operation or a visa to get to the UK so you can marry. Block him/her/it. Also there’s a documentary on channel 4 panorama I think about romance scams. Scary stuff.

Bharath · 16/06/2023 19:57

They have sent the same text to many different numbers. By replying you’ve let them know that your number is active. So now they will try to harass you into further contact. One way or another the ultimate aim is to defraud you or extort money. Block and ignore, and in future just completely ignore unexpected texts and don’t reply at all.

FernDaisy · 16/06/2023 19:58

I’ve had a lot of similar texts and calls. I assume scam.

I had a version of this yesterday but in person from the caller answered the phone said hello got hello back twice, said is that all you say hello then an indian sounding guy came out with all sorts of weird compliments in the end i cut him off still trying to work out the purpose of the call and how he got my landline number

JetBlackSteed · 16/06/2023 20:01

Yeah, it's a scam. They don't just straight up ask for cash / click this link any more. They start a "relationship" and eventually ask you to send money or buy gift cards.
Just block, job done.
For anyone else reading, they can also start out by saying they are your son calling from a friends phone as their own is out of charge or similar.

They don't get your number, their computers dial all the numbers and if its not a live number they move into the next one

BrendaMcPherson · 16/06/2023 20:07

I had a similar text last week. The first text was to someone called Alice. Like a twit, I replied and said they had the wrong number. I then got another text apologising for disturbing me. I ignored that and the next day received yet another one thanking me for my kind response and asking if we could be friends as they were new to the UK. I just blocked it.

Qantaqa · 16/06/2023 20:07

They blocked now.

Id thought nothing of messaging and saying wrong number or when they replied sysing they hoped they aren't bothered me. Its the sort of thing I'd do. The message asking my name gave me pause but I'd decided to just ignore it.

The phone call I guess I just panicked and hung up (which is daft) then whacked do not disturb on. I then looked and saw 4 further missed calls so I've blocked

I'm pretty gullible and probably could have been persuaded to enter into a text convo with a wrinf number but not enough to send money to strangers!

I had the text from my son scam! I was dead excited. Sadly for them both sons were upstairs gaming on their PCs at the time!

I get messages like that on Quora. "You sound very interesting, can we talk?"

Moonlightsonatas · 16/06/2023 20:29

Google Pig Butchering scam

Trees6 · 16/06/2023 20:31

They want to bypass UK immigration procedures by marrying some mug. They’re hoping to happen upon a lonely man or woman who’ll fall for it. Or they want to be sent money.

paradoxicalfrog · 16/06/2023 20:57

Of course it's a scam. In future don't reply to texts from numbers you don't know.
