To ask what your sleep schedule is before early flight?

So we will need to leave house around 3:30am. None of us early sleepers- night owls with late routine! But what do you normally do for red eye flight? Go to bed super early and try sleep? Stay up? Hate being tired at the airport but I guess it’s inevitable! I can’t sleep on planes either 🙈

Adults only or do you have kids?

If adults only I'd stick to normal bed time and power through the next day.

If it's with kids I'd probably try and exhaust them during the week running up...lots of after school activity, park etc, then slightly early bed time with them all showered and wake them as late as possible for the flight

AllyCart · 13/06/2023 20:35

How long is the flight? East or West?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 13/06/2023 20:37

I go to bed but don’t sleep for fear of sleeping through the alarm 🙄

Otarge · 13/06/2023 20:37

I'm on hrt with intermittent utrogestan dosing so I take a couple of utrogestan around 8 and that way I get 5/6 hours.

When I was in my teens/20s I'd stay up all night but I can't do that any more and it would ruin the first day of the holiday.

My kids are older and they muddle through with a mix of staying up late and sleeping on the flight.

When they were younger if it was an early flight I'd make sure it was a fairly local airport and have them sleep on the way there/on the plane and just have a nice peaceful first day pottering around new surroundings with an early bedtime.

NuffSaidSam · 13/06/2023 20:37

I'd try and get a few hours sleep. Probably go to bed around 10/11 and get 4/5 hours. That's enough to see you through the next day.

Sissynova · 13/06/2023 20:38

I would go to bed. If you have to leave at 03:30 then your flight isn’t until around 6/7am which is morning not overnight. It’s not a red eye. The cabin will have the lights on for most of the journey so it won’t be easy to sleep.

Newname211 · 13/06/2023 20:39

Depends where I’m going. Long haul, I’d try and sleep for a few hours. Short haul I’d stay up and have a lazy day the first day.

SamW98 · 13/06/2023 20:39

I’ve got a 7am flight in Friday which means leaving home at 3.30. Probably goto bed about 10 and try and get a few hours sleep.

How is this an AIBU? Yabu.

Me too

LaDamaDeElche · 13/06/2023 20:42

Get pissed the night before the night you have to get up early for the flight. Drag yourself through the day and then go to bed at 7pm and get 8 hours sleep. I did that by accident once and it worked a treat 😂

Mum2jenny · 13/06/2023 20:42

Go to bed a bit earlier, then set a couple of alarms to ensure I wake on time. I’m weird though as I much prefer early morning flights as it’s quieter getting through security.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 13/06/2023 20:43

Go to bed early and read my kindle with the light off if I can't drop off. It's more restful that sitting up watching tele and faffing around on my phone.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/06/2023 20:43

Early night. Deal with it next day.

Dartmoorcheffy · 13/06/2023 20:44

I plan a late night the night before and get up super early, so I'm tired early evening the night of the flight. In reality I usually end up going out, having a few drinks and dragging myself to the airport feeling like shit. I never learn.

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 13/06/2023 20:48

Long afternoon naps?

LadyLolaRuben · 13/06/2023 20:49

I sometimes don't go to sleep. Just rest in bed watching tv. I find it hard to sleep knowing I've got something I cant miss

greyhairnomore · 13/06/2023 20:50

Go to bed 9pm till 3am. I don't sleep well anyway so I'm just relaxing and night doze a bit. Do it regularly.

grayhairdontcare · 13/06/2023 20:51

Any flight before 930 then I sleep at an airport hotel and check in on line

ThinWomansBrain · 13/06/2023 20:52

v disorganised - I usually end up packing until the small hours, no sleep, traipsing off to the airport & hopefully sleeping on the plane.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 13/06/2023 20:57

Drink wine to help me sleep. Set about 300 alarms. Shower before bed so I can fall out of bed and into a cab to the airport. Power through the next day.

FrostieBoabby · 13/06/2023 20:59

I could quite happily have an evening snooze on the sofa every night, must be getting to that age 😊 so I tend to snooze rather than going to bed with early flights as the worry of sleeping too late seems to stop me sleeping at all.

I find it hard to sleep on the plane especially on the outward leg as everyone seems to be excited and chatty so there's too much noise and folks thumping past to visit the toilet.

Missing the point but never understood how 90% of the passengers on the plane have to heavy footedly thump thump thump up the aisle to visit the loo on a 3 hour flight 🙄 and the cabin crew have to make 117 announcements about overpriced mascara in the duty free.

Yours etc,

lljkk · 13/06/2023 21:29

What time is the flight, where is flight from & how long is the travel time to go home to airport?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/06/2023 21:31

Go to bed early if I possibly can, and try to sleep.

Set numerous alarms for the morning.

Be at the airport hotel the night before in the same room as teen dc who will hear it!

cocksstrideintheevening · 13/06/2023 22:06

Don't bother going to bed, you won't be able to sleep. Sleep on the plane.
