To call in sick for rest of the week?

35 weeks pregnant. Temperatures are so high, I’ve felt so sick and headachey all day. Can’t decide whether taking the piss or not. I know they can start my maternity leave at 36 weeks but down to take it then anyway.

If you feel sick and headachey then you are not fit to work - your pregnancy and upcoming maternity leave are irrelevant. However, I don’t think you should call in sick in advance as that could be seen as a bit cheeky. Make sure you’re drinking plenty and just see how you feel each morning before making the call.

MuggleMe · 12/06/2023 21:22

Take it off, but also could it be preeclampsia? Worth getting it checked out.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/06/2023 21:24

Second MuggleMe. We were very lucky and had winter babies. Must be awful for you, in this heat. Put yourself and your baby first, work will cope. Once you e been checked over, is working from home a possibility, might ease your mind.

Congratulations 😃

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/06/2023 21:36

Really hope you’re ok. Good idea to get checked out if you’re feeling really unwell, but also if you’re not well whether due to pregnancy or not it’s fine to call in sick.

SophieStew · 12/06/2023 21:39

They will just put you on maternity leave anyway at this point.

I planned to go to 36 weeks but had to leave work a week earlier (same time of year) as the heat was really affecting me.

Don’t worry about it, just relax and wait for baby.

YukoandHiro · 12/06/2023 21:42

They can't put her on mat leave til 36 weeks, so she will get paid for this week, plus her mat leave.

But yesOP, just go off want

YukoandHiro · 12/06/2023 21:42

*go off early

You should check it's not pre-eclampsia

TeaKitten · 12/06/2023 21:48

It’s not taking the piss it’s symptoms of a serious illness in pregnancy. You may not have pre eclampsia but it’s still important to take care of yourself. Headaches at the end of pregnancy aren’t to just be ignored. Hope you feel better soon OP

melj1213 · 12/06/2023 21:48

Can't you just call and say you're struggling so there no way you can come in but rather than go on sick leave for a week can they start your Mat Leave early?

Unless there is anything important that you were supposed to finish up/hand over this week I'd just start ML a week early, personally.

Elderflowerraspberry · 13/06/2023 06:48

I don’t really want to start maternity leave early to be honest. It’s only a week <groans>

You don’t have to take maternity leave early. It would be fine to take a day off sick leave today, drink plenty of water, take a break from the heat if you can. Try to get hold of your midwife to do a check as persistent headache can be a sign of preeclampsia. The midwife may suggest you need to be signed off though, on the basis of your symptoms and the heat, which would mean the rest of this week on sick leave and then automatic transfer to maternity leave at 36 weeks.

Setyoufree · 13/06/2023 06:56

I'd personally (and have done) start mat leave now

Elderflowerraspberry · 13/06/2023 06:57

I honestly don’t think it’s pre eclampsia or anything sinister, just so hot, poor sleep and probably haven’t been drinking enough. Problem is I do have some loose ends to tie up I could do with sorting. First baby was a winter one - won’t be having any more but not sure I recommend this time of year to be heavily pregnant in! Wondering how mums in Australia and the like cope!

Elderflowerraspberry · 13/06/2023 07:25
