Literally went in the garden for half an hour. 4 mosquito bites on my left leg and my left elbow got bit so is swollen. I saw the elbow drainer and it was like a pterodactyl! Anyone else have this issue?

Any hints and tips appreciated. Last year it wasn’t as bad -got away with a lit citronella stick at dusk. Seems a lot worse this year and we have 2 month old twins

Yes they are! Horrible little things, loving the blackadder reference too. No help from me, they bite me mercilessly whatever i do!

We are all god’s creatures.

Hbh17 · 12/06/2023 12:19

Yes. They are the one creature on this earth I would wish to become extinct.
And that's before we even consider the millions of deaths caused by malaria..... they are truly evil.

I don’t understand the point of them.
I get why we have wasps, spiders etc but are they of any practical use?

MaxwellCat · 12/06/2023 12:21

I’m the only one in my family that’s ever bitten by them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Avon's skin so soft oil - very good mosie repellent

Sounds like you have something called Skeeter syndrome, which is an allergy to something in mosquito saliva, it's hideous. It may be too late for an insect bite cream but it may sooth the irritation and slightly lessen the insanity inducing itching.

I have a plug in in my bedroom to deter the little buggers and it seems to work. You can get mosquito repellant bracelets. Avon Skin Soft dry oil contains citronella and is recommended by lots of people as effective protection from mosquito bites.

Surely you must know that all creatures are God’s creations, even snakes and even Satan himself. /s

Jungle formula or Autan daily before setting foot outside the house in the evening I use it here in Italy, fab stuff. Also plug in in every room and lights off in the house if windows open. Just bought velcro mosquito curtains off Amazon, to put in bedroom doorways inside the house they really work!

"until an hour before the devil fell, God thought him beautiful in heaven" :-) Sympathies, I have five bites on one arm but I am a perverse weirdo and loooooove scratching them.

Luckingfovely · 12/06/2023 12:46

They are hell on Earth indeed. I only have to think about a mosquito to swell up in hives.

I sought help on here last year after yet another horrendous reaction. I tried every single option suggested from around 100 posts, from heat to zappers to every cream and potion know to man. My research has led me to this:

Best repellent: Odomos
Best salve: Fenistil

I get both from Amazon.

For you mosquito-haters, Google "exploding mosquito" - they've been altered to not know when they're full so they just drink so much blood they die. Hahaha fuckers. There's also a gene that causes "bendy proboscis" in female mosquitos so their nasty little hate-beaks just bounce off skin. It's quite funny.

^This. I lost a good friend from the Gambia to cerebral malaria, he left a young wife with young children. Malaria kills around half a million people a year (I read somewhere), mist of them children.

I had malaria myself once, though thankfully for me it was only like a bout of flu which I recovered from.

In this country and in Europe they’re just a nuisance, though I’ve always suffered from their bites. (I hate that high pitched buzzing noise, too!)

Afterbite is brilliant.
There was a piece on mosquitoes on Springwatch - think it was Thursday ...
