To wonder if it’s ok to leave the fan on all night

Sweltering in our new build, the bedroom is an oven. Last summer we had the fan plugged in and on all night and I thought nothing more about it but since then I saw a post shared by the local fire service on social media saying it’s dangerous to plug in appliances overnight as is a fire risk

YABU - people have being doing this for years / mine is on as we speak / it’s fine

YANBU - knock it off and deal with the heat in some other way

But loads of appliances are plugged in and running overnight - fridge, I have two air purifiers going all the time, I put my dishwasher on before I go to bed. And yes have had my fan going too.
Sorry fir some reason voting doesn't come up for me.

Upsizer · 10/06/2023 23:07

Can you link to the message? Why is a fan more dangerous than anything else? Have fans been starting fires?

rightioly · 10/06/2023 23:07

Do not put your dishwasher on before you go to bed.

CremeEgg1983 · 10/06/2023 23:08

I always have mine on all night. Can't sleep without the white noise.

I have mine on all night. What’s the difference between having your fan plugged in versus your phone, for example?

Neither safe, apparently

I have smoke detectors in every room as I am twitchy about house fires (we had a day time house fire when I was a teen) but in this weather I am happy to sleep with the fan on in the bedroom.

AlwaysPlayingYellowCar · 10/06/2023 23:11

We have a fan with a timer so it’s not on all night.

theGooHasGone · 10/06/2023 23:12

Total bullshit, the chance of anything happening is infinitesimally small.

AnIntrovert · 10/06/2023 23:13

Of course, it is fine. They are on 24/7 on plenty of countries.

SophiaElise · 10/06/2023 23:14

I have two fans on all night in summer, and one through the night in other seasons (for white noise).

I lived in a developing country for a year and like most people there, I had a ceiling fan and an air conditioner on every night. The ceiling fan never dropped on my head and the AC never exploded.

SophiaElise · 10/06/2023 23:15

Ps: that should be ceiling fan OR air conditioner

Bonjovispjs · 10/06/2023 23:15

I've been having a fan on all night for years in hot weather, it's fine.

Floralnomad · 10/06/2023 23:16

I’ve got 2 on in my bedroom and my daughter has 2 in hers , no way are they being turned off.

NewPinkJacket · 10/06/2023 23:16

I'm menopausal. If I didn't have the fan on all night when it's hot, I'd never sleep a wink.

Thelnebriati · 10/06/2023 23:17

We run fans all night, we use surge protectors and have a couple of those mini fire extinguishers hanging around just in case.

A fan has a motor, which is more likely to overheat or spark. But the risk is still very low.

Hotandverybothered · 10/06/2023 23:21

If I could get to our attic I would definitely have the fan on !

KingOfThieves · 10/06/2023 23:24

Mine is on all night. I am not going to worry about it.

My mam always puts it on before bed has done for years

SweetBirdsong · 10/06/2023 23:39

I have had it on for a few nights, and I will have it on tonight! I didn't have it on last night (when I went to bed at 11.45pm,) BUT I woke at 3am feeling like the heating was on - stifling it was. So I put it on. Still on at 8.30am when I woke. I never notice a massive increase in my electric bill when the fan is on. Doesn't use much power.

Wexone · 11/06/2023 00:06

Why can't you put your dishwasher on at night? 🤷‍♀️ mine goes on nearly every night when go to bed. has done for over 30 years. himself empties it before I get up in morning (gets up for work alot earlier than me) I also put my washing machine on before bed too. nothing happens 🤷‍♀️

Skyrim41 · 11/06/2023 00:10

Just please don't use frayed wires or chargers.

BodegaSushi · 11/06/2023 00:12

My fan is on all night every night all year long. I'm from the Caribbean and people have multiple fans on all night every night. We do not have an abundance of house fires
