To be critical of DH driving style (lighthearted)

Will preface this & tell you I have been driving for longer than he, he has only had his licence for 3 years so relatively new driver I guess. That being said he has done pass plus and is generally a more confident driver than me on motorways and such

To be fair to him he is calm, very observant and never has any form of road rage, as well as noticing hazards from a good distance away. But I have noticed he often drives in a gear higher than I would choose. So, if he’s doing 26mph on a straight flat road, he will change to 4th gear, and at 37mph he’s often in 5th. Changes to 6th gear as soon as he hits 50. This is at 1500 revs usually. I can hear the engine almost humming (lugging?) and I am cautious that he might be inadvertently damaging the gearbox or engine through driving like this everywhere. I haven’t mentioned it to him though as I wouldn’t like someone criticising my driving if they were giving me a lift. I wouldn’t change up a gear until I hit 2000 revs under most circumstances, more like two and a half thousand if uphill

Who is BU?

YABU - you, his driving’s fine
YANBU - him, tell him every time he does it

He's driving how learners are taught, but you are correct in your driving, having much more control over acceleration and deceleration

And it sounds like you don't know when to change gear and are wasting a lot of money on fuel unnecessarily (and also damaging the environment).

I drive at 30mph in 5th (as the car tells me too) and what confuses people is that people want more power at 30mph in a 30 zone.....

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 10/06/2023 19:01

This is how I was taught.

I often drive at 30mph in 5th gear.

Cherryblossoms85 · 10/06/2023 19:06

Cars have changed a lot. In older cars you can't change up very fast as the ratios are different. These days you get quite enough power to change up to 4th or even 5th by 30mph. If you're pushing out to 2500 you're wasting fuel.

Spottypineapple · 10/06/2023 19:23

Do you drive different cars?

I can't say I ever look at the numbers anymore....I just know how the car feels and change gears accordingly.

BotterMon · 10/06/2023 19:24

Buy him an automatic if it annoys you that much?

Theunamedcat · 10/06/2023 19:26

He is about right on a six gear car

I have one its a pain in the ass

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 10/06/2023 19:50

My car has lights that light up when you should move up or down a gear. If I'm doing 27/28mph in 3rd gear it will say I need to move up a gear.

Lottieskeeper · 10/06/2023 20:38

YABU
You should change up as soon as you can. Driving at higher revs just wastes fuel.
Different cars need to be reved differently. Some like being reved higher than others. Engine size, type and fuel type will effect this.

Keitharingsbitch · 10/06/2023 21:13

I've been driving for 20 years and think in general you're taught to be in as high a gear as poss. (I'm simplifying) how long have you been driving for that not to be the case? And what were you taught?
