To expect to be able to find a cafe that's open at 2pm on a Saturday?

In a smallish town, killing time while I wait for dd. There are multiple cafes but they all seem to have closed by 2pm. Is that not unusual?

I get that most will stop serving lunch by that time, but can't even get a coffee. And I have another 2 hours to hang around!!🙄

AIBU to have expected that I might be able to find somewhere to sit down and get a drink?!

Pubs often serve coffee ?

Stepupandupagain · 10/06/2023 14:29

Try and pub.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 10/06/2023 14:29

This is unusual. My small town has 2 Costas, a Starbucks, 2 nice independents and even 2 Greggs which have seats who will make you a coffee!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 10/06/2023 14:31

Thank you, pub is a good idea. Will try to find one!

Any dessert shops? They seem to open in the afternoon (and sell coffee!)

I'm thinking it might be quite a deprived area from what I can see. So maybe nobody can afford cafés at the moment and they don't see the point in opening.

Supermarket? At least next time you will know

Kazzyhoward · 10/06/2023 14:44

Saturday mornings are usually busy for early morning trade, so staff will probably be starting early and have done their hours by 2pm. If they have to open longer, they'd need to give lunch hours and/or have two shifts. When staff are hard to find, two shifts may be hard to do, and the staff they have may not want to do longer hours. Unfortunately, with the current staff shortages, a lot of smaller places are doing well to open at all, and will concentrate their opening hours on the busiest times of day.

No, found an Asda and a Tesco but no cafe in either. However, I have now found a slightly dark but reasonably welcoming pub, and they have kindly agreed to get me some coffee. So I am happy now!!

Yes, that's fair enough. I was just surprised as my town has tons of places open at this time.

You'd think so, yes, but a lot of small independent cafes are run more as a hobby than as a business-the owners don't want to work full time and don't want to take on staff.
