Thinking of cancelling my JC subscription now that Giles Coren has been announced as their new columnist

I was shocked that Giles Coren was announced as the new cooking columnist of the Jewish Chronicle this week. My family have subscribed to the JC for a long time and I am seriously thinking of cancelling my subscription. I can’t understand why the fact that Giles Coren created an alt account to send himself and his wife anti-Semitic abuse is not an issue for the editor of the JC. When the JC employed Nick Cohen, who was fired from the Observer as a columnist after sexually harassing a colleague, that also upset me. I feel disturbed and disgusted. Why has the JC become a sort of last chance saloon for Jewish media sex pests and racists? Should I write a letter of complaint to the editor or just cancel my subscription?

Giles Coren made an alternative Twitter account to send antisemitic message and defend his wife from critics

If you're going to cancel, make sure they know why.

I would start by writing a letter to the editor - I don't think that you would be the only person to do this. I noticed this when we got the JC yesterday. I had forgotten about the incident you mentioned but felt that because of other things that he has written, it is a poor fit.

Nagado · 10/06/2023 15:30

I’d write to the editor and tell them why I was cancelling. You can’t be the only person who feels this way and it’s likely to have more of an impact than simply cancelling (which either won’t be noticed or could be attributed to household cutbacks).

CoffeeCantata · 10/06/2023 16:14

Yes, definitely let them know why.

It seems there are no consequences for the spiteful behaviour Giles Coren has shown.

PriamFarrl · 10/06/2023 16:16

Have you already started a thread on this under a different name or are there two annoyed people?

PTSDBarbiegirl · 10/06/2023 16:26

Tell them why. GC is a duplicitous horrible little shit.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/06/2023 16:29

Do both! Cancel & tell them why. I doubt you're the only subscriber/reader that feels this way, if enough of you tell them hopefully they'll become a bit more rigorous with the recruitment process!

How the great Alan Coren spawned such an appalling son is beyond me.
Cancel and complain OP. You won't be alone.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/06/2023 16:37

YANBU OP. Coren is a disgusting human being on many many levels. His antisemitic sock puppet is just one of those things. On discovering her untimely death at 34, he crowed about it and said she should rot in hell.Angry

Gross, pathetic, talentless little man.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/06/2023 16:42

Sorry, that should be:

On discovering the untimely death at 34 of journalist Dawn Foster, he tweeted his revolting gloat.

I'm not a regular reader, but that election front page was magnificent. Now they've hired the dreaded Giles? That's quite mercurial.

Well of course not, daddy's little dumplings don't face repercussions for their actions, ever. Such is the world of the elite.
