Soft close toilet seats are unreasonable

I understand soft close kitchen cupboards- although they steal the pleasure and satisfaction of an angry slam during a fight- but toilet seats is ridiculous. You shut the lid to flush but have to wait around for the close. Wasted time. You need a pee and a man has left it the toilet seat fully up- the dropping of that seat is needed to be swift. Instead the last 3cm take 10 seconds. Why are they a thing? What's the point?

That’s not how mine works…? I can close it manually, but if I only half close it, it will finish the job gradually and softly. This applies to both the seat and the lid.

The soft close mechanism doesn’t stop you closing it, it just stops it slamming if you drop it.

If yours doesn’t do this, maybe it’s broken?

FictionalCharacter · 07/06/2023 02:44

YABU! I really liked mine - closed nice and quietly, and wasn’t that slow, just smooth.

steff13 · 07/06/2023 02:48

Can't you open and close it manually? On mine if you drop it it closes slowly, But I still have the ability to push it down.

Zarataralara · 07/06/2023 03:01

And I forget that other toilets don’t have soft close lids and have to apologise for the loud crashing noise.

EBearhug · 07/06/2023 03:11

No they're not unreasonable. I say this after having stayed in a hotel last night, where the toilet seat wasn't soft close, and if I'd been a man, I'd have probably self-circumcised as it dropped. (Of course, if I hadn't been with a man, I'd have never had to lower it in the first place.)

Beachbodyready · 07/06/2023 03:35

Completely agree - hate them and refuse to have them in my house. They are far too slow

TshirtInColour · 07/06/2023 04:07

Clearly bonkers, they prevent a slamming lid sound, but if you prefer to, push it close manually.
Not rocket science

I find they are really useful when there is a sleeping toddler in the next room. He would most certainly be woken if we accidentally dropped it when closing (as I have done with other seats!) which is loud!

This. You have a choice - push it down or wait for it to go down. Even using the automatic feature, mine takes about three seconds.

GaspingGekko · 07/06/2023 04:30

You've clearly never been woken up at 5am every week day by a small child slamming the toilet lid shut.

Lacucuracha · 07/06/2023 07:13

Just push it down? Takes 1 second. I don’t get the issue.

Florissante · 07/06/2023 07:32

YABVU.

BelandtheDragon · 07/06/2023 07:34

YABVU; they are a game changer. Have 3 of them. I recommend them to people!

Sleeepdeprived · 07/06/2023 07:35

Just flush once you’ve pushed the lid shut, even if it hasn’t fully closed yet? Yabu
