To ask how to rehydrate in this situation?

Guys I know it’s not really an AIBU but please I need answers I’m so sick and no energy to read through the net! I have diarrhea anytime I try to eat (so I stopped that) or drink water. It’s the water bit that’s worrying me as how do I rehydrate? It also happens straight away if I drink a rehydration drink. I did vomit on Thursday night but that was from alcohol as I’m not used to drinking and over indulged a bit. All day yday had no appetite but put it down to hangover. Surely it can’t still be a hangover today? Is it similar to vomiting where you can’t keep water down and so can dehydrate, if it’s also happening though diarrhea? Also TMI warning so I’ll skip a like so you can stop reading now if you want to avoid

but it’s really strange it’s got an orange tint sometimes and smells really foul like almost fishy. I don’t even eat fish!

unable to eat or drink properly since Thursday (so 48 hours nearly yes?) and the TMI definitely doesn’t sound normal.

call 111 and get some proper medical advice

Ukholidaysaregreat · 03/06/2023 21:10

Sip water slowly. One sip every other minute. If you take loads of fluid in at once it can be too much. I would call 111 and see what they advise. Hope you feel better soon.

Lis1992 · 03/06/2023 21:11

Hi @Daffidale thank you for your reply. I’m in Ireland so we don’t have the option to ring 111 for advice. Well yesterday I barely ate but did try plain toast. It’s today the diarrhea got really bad. I don’t want to ring for medical advice to be told it’s just a two day hangover but I’m worried that the water is passing through. Maybe worrying about dehydration is a bit extreme!

Try an ice lolly

I was going to say this.

When DD had (what I like to call) the storming shits, I would give her a calpol syringe of water (5ml) every 5 mins. She could usually tolerate that.

CheesePls · 03/06/2023 21:14

Ice lollies work magic

CatsOnTheChair · 03/06/2023 21:21

A teaspoon of rehydration fluid every 15 mins.
Or diluted fruit juice (ie the stuff you normally drink as is, but dilute it) with a pinch of salt added.
But slowly slowly on the fluids.

Summerscoming23 · 03/06/2023 21:25

Flat 7up or lucozade, wee sip every few minutes.

GettingStuffed · 03/06/2023 21:25

If you really can't keep anything to go hospital where you'll get anticipating stuff and possibly a,drip to dehydrate you

But you can ring caredoc or the local equivalent. I'd do that and see what they say.

Salmonella poisoning has fishy smelling diarrhea.

PutMyFootinit · 03/06/2023 21:27

Immodium 🤷‍♀️

Indoorcatmum · 03/06/2023 21:28

You need electrolytes. You can get sachets to add to water.

Plain water WON'T hydrate you and will continue to deplete your body of salts and minerals.

BRAT for food. Bananas, Rice, Apples and dry toast.

Salmonella poisoning has fishy smelling diarrhea.

I was going to suggest food poisoning too.

Lis1992 · 03/06/2023 21:30

@Indoorcatmum Thanks you’re absolutely right. I took the ORS rehydration. However I need to go the bathroom after that or small sips of water so I’m guessing I’m wondering if I’m ‘getting’ the hydration still. If that makes sense

Did this start with the alcohol? How much did you drink. You may have alcohol poisoning, if you're not a bit better by Monday call the doctor.

Throwncrumbs · 03/06/2023 21:33

So you had alcohol on Thursday and over indulged? You could have alcohol induced pancreatitis. Speak to a doctor as it can be quite serious if it is.

SophiaElise · 03/06/2023 21:35

I'd be concerned about electrolyte imbalance, so you really should see a doctor if this doesn't improve.

Lis1992 · 03/06/2023 21:36

@Invisimamma not a massive amount but I don’t have a good alcohol tolerance. Yeah it did start there as I vomited twice and then the next day no appetite but just had mild diarrhea .
I was okay drinking water yesterday too, just not food. Now today it’s this frequent every time I drink. I have Imodium but don’t want to take as I’ve heard it’s not always advised

Againstmachine · 03/06/2023 21:37

Most sort of sports drink could help as they wil help replenish your lost minerals.

Lis1992 · 03/06/2023 21:37

@Throwncrumbs Is that not only if you drink alcohol frequently and heavily? This was one night of one too many I’m not a regular drinker

OP posts:
Summerishereagain · 03/06/2023 21:38

Are you still weeing? If you haven’t weed in 12 hours you need medical help.

Lis1992 · 03/06/2023 21:45

@Summerishereagain Yeah I am!

Drink something with sugar in it, your body won't be able to absorb water on it's own, especially if you have a bug.

Thisisbollocksmark · 03/06/2023 23:17

Keep sipping an electrolyte drink. If you can keep it down, you'll be ok.

They say not to have immodium if you have a stomach bug because your body is trying to pass the infection. If this is triggered by drinking alcohol and definitely not a stomach bug, I would say you're alright to have it.
