Sorry not an aibu but we’re going into central london on Saturday and looking for recommendations for a really good Indian or Thai food restaurant please! Budget £125 for both, only dh drinks and he’ll be happy with a couple of beers. Not too posh or too casual with a good, vibrant atmosphere.

Thank you!

The Veeraswamy, Regent Street.

Even though they are a chain, dishoom is decent. There’s one in Covent Garden. For Thai, kiln in soho is good. Or I used to go to patara, also nice.

Tamarind Kitchen (lower key sister restaurant to Tamarind in Mayfair) is excellent Indian.

2021mumma · 01/06/2023 20:26

Chutney Mary or Dishoom

Divorcedalongtime · 01/06/2023 20:38

Dishoom is awesome

OneTC · 01/06/2023 20:52

Another vote for dishoom

cocksstrideintheevening · 01/06/2023 21:11

Gymkhana for Indian

HeyMicky · 01/06/2023 21:14

Brigadiers is fantastic

HeyMicky · 01/06/2023 21:15

Or Darjeeling Express

Mosaic123 · 01/06/2023 21:15

Make sure you book a table

Thechameleonsshadow · 01/06/2023 21:16

Rasa in N16 for amazing South Indian food.

Mummypete · 01/06/2023 21:16

If you can get a table Kin & Deum in London Bridge is excellent. I have dreams about their pad Thai.

karmakameleon · 01/06/2023 21:16

My vote goes to Cinnamon Kitchen. Bit more upmarket than Dishoom but both do good food.

MyAnacondaMight · 01/06/2023 21:18

Gymkhana or Brigadiers for Indian. More casual but I also like Gunpowder and Kricket. All beat Dishoom, which isn’t bad itself.

Thai is much harder in central. The best tend to be casual little neighbourhood places around zone 3. Maybe look at Kiln in Soho.

SocksAndTheCity · 01/06/2023 21:19

Cinnamon Club on Great Smith Street is very nice, or at least it always used to be (I haven't been for ages so check reviews) 😊

ADHDGURL · 01/06/2023 21:40

Gymkhana or Brigadiers classy food is superb

kirinm · 01/06/2023 21:41

The Begging Bowl in Peckham.

MindPalace · 01/06/2023 21:45

The nine course menu at Cinnamon Kitchen, Liverpool St. Delicious, great value, fun atmosphere and knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Schoolhelp23 · 01/06/2023 21:47

The Heron pub near Paddington is some of the best Thai food I've had (and I love Thai food).

SQLsurfer · 01/06/2023 21:47

Another vote for dishoom. The King's Cross one - make sure you're upstairs 👌🏼

Lottapianos · 01/06/2023 21:49

Absolutely love Dishoom. For Thai, have heard rave reviews about Supawan in Kings Cross, but haven't tried it myself yet

NapoleonDidSurrender · 01/06/2023 21:51

You will have to queue for dishoom so just be prepared. Your chance of getting a table reservation is slim but queue and it will be worth it. If you go to KX then Coal Drops Yard is great for a wander.

WildishBambino · 01/06/2023 21:52

Kiln in Soho for Thai - have been and can recommend. Or the Smoking Goat, but that's East London not central. Both innovative Thai and quite trendy.

For Chinatown try Thai Thao in Rupert St. Bit more traditional and relaxed.

Plaza Khao Gaeng in Centrepoint is very highly praised, but can't comment from personal experience.

I know it's a chain but Thai Square isn't bad at all.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 01/06/2023 21:52

For super authentic Pakistani food for a fraction of £125 Lahore Kahari on Tooting high road.

Another vote for the Heron for Thai

Thethreegirls · 01/06/2023 21:54

For Indian- as authentic as possible- - Dhaba 46, Tandoor Chop House, the Veeraswamy

For Indian Fusion- Dhishoom Carnaby, I don't know but I didn't like Dhishoom Covent Garden
